Love me, love my dog-walking

Fretting over the latest exercise routines and trends? Considering a new diet to help lose those pesky few pounds that won’t go away? If you’ve got a pooch at home, you may be over-thinking this whole fitness thing. As it turns out, (wo)man’s best friend is also a pretty good workout buddy!

Like us, dogs need regular exercise in order to stay happy and healthy. For many of us, letting the dog out into the yard may seem like a good way to get him worked up – but if you’re looking to lose a few pounds, working out with your dog may be the better option. Why not? Get out that leash, because we’re going for a walk!

A long walk – about 30 minutes – will help get your heart rate up, start your metabolism and improve muscle tone in your legs. Plus, it’s a great way to get some fresh air and maybe even meet a few new people along the route!

Try spicing up your routine by walking a different path each day. Visit local parks and preserves where your pup will have all kinds of new sights and smells to take in, and bring along a few toys to play fetch if you tire out before Fido does. Don’t forget to give your four-legged friend a treat when you get home – and feel free to enjoy a healthy snack yourself!
