Must wear makeup to the gym? Here are some tips

We have a certain picture of pounding the treadmill, our flawless skin just glistening with sweat as our faces take on a healthy glow. Of course, that’s not the reality (at least not for most women). The reality is splotchy red patches mixed with exposed blemishes, colorless lips and streaks of sweat everywhere.

Of course, you’re not alone in looking like this when you work out. After all, the gym is not a beauty parlor. Most people probably don’t notice your less-than-runway-ready skin while you are on the StairMaster, but it can still bring you down. If you’re like many women, you might have a dirty (or sweaty?) little gym secret – makeup.

So you wear makeup to the gym. So what? We’re not here to judge, only to help. After all, it’s likely that everyone is guilty of a little grooming before hitting the gym at one time or another. No matter your reason for primping pre-gym, there is now makeup that won’t give you away. Stick to these all-star basics to feel your absolute best while pumping iron.

Waterproof mascara. Nothing gives you away like streaky eye makeup. When you are working it on the treadmill or pumping out those push ups, your sweat is more than likely to stream near your eyes, putting your mascara at risk of smudging. As long as you wear waterproof, your lashes will be perfectly defined until the very end of your workout. They might even last through your post-gym shower!

Tinted moisturizer. While there are plenty of good sweat-proof foundations out there, you might be better off with a tinted moisturizer or BB cream for the gym. These will give you just enough coverage and even out dark or red spots, but are light enough that they won’t run when you start sweating.

Tinted lip balm. Having color on your lips is one of the easiest ways to light up your face. We’re not suggesting you wear lipstick to the gym, though. If your lips don’t have much color naturally, wear a tinted lip balm or lip butter. This will add just enough color and moisture that looks natural. It’s also unfussy, so you don’t need a mirror to apply.

The only thing to be concerned about is that with these tricks, your makeup might be SO good that is still looks fine after you’ve left the gym. Remember to wash your face after a workout, since the makeup and sweat can make a perfect, bacteria-laden breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria. Now go get your gym on – glamorously!
