Maybe you were amused initially when throngs of young girls began sporting Pocahontas-like rooster feathers in their hair, but now it seems like the trend has tickled the fancy of some of the most unlikeliest people (think: Steven Tyler). If you're one of those people and are wondering whether a) it's too late to jump on the bandwagon or b) you're too old to rock a feather or two, we would actually say no to either. Here are a handful of tips for making classy, age-appropriate feather extensions work for you.
• Make them cruelty free! A lot of the bad press received by feather extensions at first came from animal rights advocates who knew the dirty truth about where all that plumage was coming from. Many roosters are killed for their feathers, so look for synthetic ones. Some retailers sell real feathers that fell off naturally (sans-killing), so that could be another option.
• Look to ladies your own age for inspiration. Ke$ha might not be able to point the way for you, but celebs like Paula Abdul, Lauren Hutton, Heidi Klum and Roseanne Barr have all rocked feather extensions tactfully.
• Keep it natural. You can asked for striped or polka dotted feathers that match your natural hair color and won't make you look like you're headed to a rave. That being said, don't be afraid of color if that's what you really want – a tastefully placed pink feather can be a fun accessory to beat away the winter blues.
