Getting it all out of your system: The juicing craze

We can't always escape toxins, stress and unhealthy foods, but we can cleanse our systems of all the accumulated bad stuff every now and then to make up for it. That's partly the appeal of the juicing trend, a detox fad that many Americans now swear by. Here are some of the most popular juice cleanse companies – and a couple of parting tips to keep in mind if you're considering one.

Cooler Cleanse: This company prides itself on using "a hydraulic press to turn pounds of organic, raw vegetables and fruits into gourmet, jewel-colored drinks," taking the "gross" stigma out of fruit and vegetable juices. Everything about their process is local, sustainable and organic. Plus, they're hyper vigilant about preserving nutrients to make sure you get everything you need to out of their drinks. Not to mention get them delivered to your door.

Blueprint Cleanse: Blueprint also delivers, and it offers options to people with varying levels of commitment. Meaning if you want to go all-liquid, you've got plenty of tasty beverages to choose from. But if you want to be a little more moderate and "Juice 'Til Dinner," that's fine too. Blueprint will even supply you with a cleanse-friendly two-course vegetarian, mostly raw vegan meal (and snacks).

Organic Avenue: This fresh-pressed line of visually appealing juice bottles is made by a company that also does booster shots…and food, and snacks. Organic Avenue has created five unique cleansing "experiences" that are raw, organic and obviously vegan.

The idea behind all of these juice cleanses is that it will give your body a break from processing and allow it to restore energy to its daily functions, making you feel brighter, lighter, more aware and even more compassionate. Sounds great, right? If you're ready to order your shipment, slow down first and just be sure to take the following items into account.

1. Changing your diet drastically can be a big deal. If you're new to these things, it's a good idea to consult with your doctor first. Even healthy people can feel sick when they go on an all-liquid cleanse, so be prepared to at least back yourself up with some healthy vegetarian meals if you start to feel under the weather.

2. Juicing alone usually isn't enough to get the whole-scale experience. You'll want to eliminate cigarettes, alcohol, coffee, refined sugar, saturated fat, any overly processed foods and ideally any stressful situations in your life (though that's easier said than done). Drinking plenty of water is recommended during any detox, but you should be able to get a fair amount from the juices themselves.

3. A cleanse is about feeling good and healthy. Don't worry if you can't survive on an all-liquid diet. Try to avoid cooked or processed foods, animal products or saturated fats of any kind, and you should be feeling like a new you within a week or two!
