Getting your man to exercise . . . with you

While I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day (I am not single nor bitter nor a cat lady – I just don’t care for the day) my experience might help other couples looking for a healthy and fun date idea! That is because after more than eight months into my relationship with my boyfriend, I finally achieved the impossible – I got him to take an indoor cycling (commonly referred to as spinning) class with me.

Let me backtrack. Like many women in New York City, I love taking boutique fitness classes. Also, I am a runner. And while I’m here I might as well brag – I happen to be a marathoner.

Since I love working out and I also love my boyfriend, I often felt like I had to choose: spend time with him or hit the weights. And more often than not, I chose the couch – and the cookies – with my man.

To combat this, I tried getting him to enjoy my favorite exercises with me. Seems selfish, but he needs it for his own health too. Really, I’m doing him a favor. He should thank me! (With jewelry!)

All jokes aside, I really have begged my boyfriend to take my favorite fitness class, Refine Method, with me.  But I understand why he didn’t want to. That class is HARD and he is not exactly in the greatest shape. Poor boy didn’t want to embarrass himself in front of me. OK, I get it.

So I tried to get him to run with me. He walks for an hour most days anyway, so I figured the jump to running wouldn’t be too challenging. How cute would we be, jogging in Central Park on a cool fall day? How cute would we be, crossing the finish line of a race holding hands?

I even took him to a specialty running store and had him fitted for the right sneakers.  We bought the shoes, and that’s about as far as we’ve gotten. Which is why I was shocked when I said the other day, “FlyWheel is having a 90s old school hip hop theme ride on Thursday night. I’m gonna go! Want to join?” and after only a moment’s hesitation, he said yes.

He was understandably nervous in the days leading up to the class. He had no idea what to expect, even though I tried calming his fears by explaining, “You’re literally just on a bike for 45 minutes. You don’t even have to turn your bike’s resistance up; no one will ever know if you keep it easy the whole time!” And even though I told him the studio provides free water bottles and free towels, he still came supplied with his own – because some random website told him he should.

During class I looked over a couple of times and he looked great! After, he had nothing bad to say. And the best part? He said he would like to do it again.

While indoor cycling isn’t my number one exercise choice, I’ll gladly do it more often if it means my sweetie goes with me. I loved spending the time with him and breaking a sweat. I love that I inspired him to do something healthy for himself.  I love that he not only didn’t hate the class or curse me for making him suffer for 45 minutes, but instead he had a great time – with me by his side.
