Time for a detox diet or a juice cleanse? Not so fast…
You can recover from your foodie fumble and get your diet back on track without spending your hard earned, game day winnings (you bet on the Giants, right?) on an expensive juice cleanse regime.
The truth is, you don’t need a liquid diet at all. In fact, the last thing you ever need to do is to fast on juice for a week.
And here’s why:
- On most juice cleanses you will be drinking about 140 grams of sugar a day. That’s over three times the recommended daily intake! I call this “a cup of sugar with a health halo.”
- Severe calorie restriction will set you up for a post-detox binge.
- Juice cleanses lack in protein so you might sacrifice muscle thus lowering your metabolism.
- Detox diets and juice cleanses are severely restrictive which can lead to disordered eating.
- Most of the weight you lose is water weight and it will return as soon as you go back to your regularly scheduled eating regime.
It is the livers job to detoxify your body, plain and simple. The liver is a magical organ. No, it doesn’t come in a cute bottle. And it isn’t well branded, marketed and sold at the hottest boutique exercise studio. But it works.
“But I ate a bucket of chicken wings and binged on booze all weekend! I need something to re-set my system and put me on the right track!”
If this is the case then simply follow this plan for 5-7 days:
- Eliminate caffeine and alcohol.
- Cut out wheat, meat, and sugar.
- Eat foods in their whole, natural form with a focus on organic greens.
- Avoid anything with an ingredient list.
- Drink at least 10 glasses of water a day.
That’s it! That is all you have to do. Your body will thank you for feeding it good, clean, wholesome food.
