Fixing the Makeup Looks Guys Hate

I am one of those women who never leaves the house without some makeup on. I would like to say that I wear it purely for myself, but the truth is that it’s mostly to impress other people. As women, there are times when we try to make an impression on other women and times when we want to dazzle members of the opposite sex. If you have ever tried to entice a guy by wearing some striking makeup, you may have found out the hard way that this technique often doesn’t work.

Yes, men are drawn to a pretty face, but they tend to prefer cosmetics that don’t scream, “Hey, I’m wearing makeup!” What men like is makeup that creates the illusion that you are naturally flawless (so his friends will be insanely jealous that he managed to get you). According to interviews with guys on both Cosmopolitan and Real Beauty, the consensus seems to be that red lipstick, bright eye colors and heavy applications send guys running for the hills.

Seeing red – A lot of women love the look of a bold red lipstick. For us, it adds a touch of sophistication and is a great ‘look at me’ touch. As far as guys are concerned though, red lipstick is messy when kissing, unnatural and harsh.

A more captivating crimson – For a more guy-friendly red lip, try a red gloss on your pout. The pigmentation is less intense and glossy lips are often very appealing to men because they give your pucker a plump, juicy appearance. Plus, there are plenty of non-sticky formulations if you are anticipating a make-out session.

Color him unimpressed – While we have a lot of fun experimenting with vivid new shadows, liners and mascaras, guys are inclined to see the colorful eye look as a bit insane.

Play with smoke – For times when you want to play up your eyes to impress a guy (or a few), try opting for a subtle smoky look. Choose a neutral palette like browns, grays or khakis and don’t be too heavy handed.

Too much of a good thing – Men seem to take issue with dramatic makeup in general. Thick foundation is a big no-no, as is severe looking eye makeup.

Take it down a notch – To lighten things up, try a foundation with sheerer coverage or a tinted moisturizer. For eyes you can tone down the application or use a lighter shade.

Of course, wearing makeup is not all about impressing guys, but when you want to, it can help. If you find yourself wanting to create a guy-luring look then just remember that men like your real beauty to shine through, so don’t cover it up too much.
