Ever wonder if your skincare routine is doing more damage than you know? Here are some of the biggest skin offense that you could be making and you have no clue.
1. Not wearing sunscreen in the winter. We’re quickly approaching beach season, but for some of us, winter weather is still around. Always wear sunscreen. UVA rays never take a break! And did you know that if your office is by a window, you can still have the affects of the UVA rays? This is because glass doesn’t keep UVA rays out. Also, the glare of ice and snow reflect the sun. Sun damage = wrinkled skin. It is best to find a daily moisturizer that has sunscreen in it. Bottom line: don’t breakup with your sunscreen. Ever.
2. Lack of sleep. It almost seems that not getting enough sleep is a badge of honor. Everyone wants to hustle and grind and flex their overachieving multi-tasking muscles. Getting enough sleep – and that varies from person to person – is essential to looking refreshed versus worn out. If you have trouble getting sleep, try to pinpoint why. We are all busy, but we have to take care of ourselves. I know that for me, I actually make an appointment with my pillow. If my work is not done, I still go to bed. Getting enough sleep also improves your mood, energy and outlook on life.
3. Alcohol, coffee and junk food. These foods and beverages act as diuretics –which is code for dehydrating your body. Foods high in salt can also destroy your skin. So what can you do? Cut back on the number of drinks you are having, start reducing those lattes and countless cups of coffee and stick to water. Your brain is 90 percent water, muscles 75 percent water and blood 83 percent water. So you can see why H2O is so important. Reach for your water glass and carry a water bottle everywhere with you! Limit the use of the salt shaker and steer clear of junk and processed food.
4. Wrong skin care products. The right products can make all the difference in making your skin look fresh and happy. You don’t want a harsh cleanser that leaves your skin dry. Harsh cleansers leave the skin tight and dry. This creates dead skin build up and oil becomes trapped in pores resulting in more oil. It’s a never ending cycle! Avoid the ingredients ‘sodium lauryl sulfate’ and ‘ammonium lauryl sulfate’ as these will dry your skin out. The more lather a cleanser has, the more it will dry your skin out. Conversely, the less lather, the less drying affect. Also, avoid alcohol based toners/cleansers. Alcohol dries your skin out and we don’t want that!
Good skincare is a daily process. There is no magic trick, but if you follow the above suggestions of what not to do, you’re on your way to healthy, happy skin!
