Heat damage sucks!

Have you ever had heat damage? I have. Twice!! Heat damage is when your hair is burned and if your hair is textured, it may loosen up.  Your hair’s health has been compromised. This usually occurs when you are getting a blow out and straightening- especially if you use excessive heat. You take a risk every time you blow out and straighten your hair. You usually won’t know your hair has heat damage until you wash it again and notice that your hair feels bad (oftentimes like straw) and your curls have loosened.

The first time I had heat damage, I didn’t even know that’s what it was. I honestly thought that the shampoo assistant accidentally got relaxer into my head of tightly coiled curls….  or maybe it was some relaxer left over in the shampoo bowl.  I then realized that my hair had been burned.

How do you prevent heat damage?

For one, try not to use heat on it every day. I know some ladies like to wash their hair everyday and blow it out but that can be detrimental to your hair health. Try to go longer in between blowouts especially if you have color in your hair.

Secondly, whenever you do blow out or straighten your hair, make sure you use a heat protectant. Start out with a great foundation — with a shampoo and conditioner that are highly moisturizing. Before you blow out, make sure you use a protectant which most lines carry from drugstore hair products to high end products. If you put that on prior to the heat, you lessen your chances of heat damage.

What do you do if you already have heat damage?

I’ve heard multiple deep conditioners and stale beer rinses work.  That is malarkey — once your hair is damaged, it is damaged. Period. Your hair is already compromised.

When I had heat damage, People would tell me I had to cut all of my hair off. If you don’t want to go that route, you can trim your hair little by little to eventually cut the damaged hair. I chose not to cut off all of my hair for a very small section of heat damaged hair. I’m sure some others would have made another decision. If the majority of your hair is damaged, then you may want to think about cutting it off and starting over. You have to do what’s best for you and your situation.

There are many ways to conceal heat damage. It definitely does suck to have damage, but you can get through it.
