Heed the hair: Tips for hair removal this spring

Waxing is one option that tends to last the longest.

Your skin may be smooth as a baby’s bottom and tanned as a Californian lifeguard, but hair that went unnoticed over the winter is going to take center stage when you slip into your favorite spring outfits. Luckily, there are a number of ways to get rid of it.

Shaving. Of course, the old razor and shaving cream trick that we all learned as teenagers (or earlier for us hairy types) is still a reliable stand by. Shaving is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to get rid of hair. You can use a razor to tackle your legs, underarms and bikini line, since the hair there is coarse. Using an antibacterial body wash instead of shaving cream can prevent razor burn, and make sure your blade is sharp. Even dropping it in the shower once can cause dings that can nick you.

Waxing. Whether you get it done professionally or do it at home, waxing is another popular method for removing body hair because it lasts for two weeks or more.

If you’re doing it at home, there are a couple ways you can lessen that ripping sting. First, numb the area with a gel like PFB Numb-IT to minimize the pain of removing waxing strips. Also, make sure you’re going to get all those stubborn strands by dusting the area with baby powder. This will absorb sweat and oil so the wax sticks better, meaning you will only have to rip that strip once.

Depilatories. Hair removal creams like Veet can be found at your drug store, and are a painless and relatively inexpensive option for hair removal. Because these products help hair grow back soft, not stubbly, it is a good option if you are looking to get rid of hair on your arms, upper lip and tummy.

Insider tip – look for one that comes with a plastic scraper, to make it easy and mess-free to remove. Also, aim to use these products before you shower, since the smell can be pretty strong.

Once you have conquered the unwanted hair on your body, you’ll really be ready to bare it all in the gorgeous weather.
