Natural Sore Throat Remedies

Like everyone else this winter, I’ve had my fair share of sore throats.  I usually freak out because whenever I get a sore throat, I’m struck with the flu a few days later.  Allergies, dry air, changes in weather and pollutants can also cause them, but it never fails that I get hit with the flu no matter what the cause.

Sore throat medicines can get pricey and most of the time (for me anyway) they rarely work.  This winter I sought out natural remedies for my sore throat and was pleasantly surprised by how many actually worked!  Below are some natural remedies that will not only help relieve your pain, but are pretty tasty to boot!

  1. Garlic.  Garlic is known as a cure-all for a lot of ailments.  I ate two crushed garlic gloves one morning when I woke up with a sore throat and it was gone by the afternoon!
  2. Apple Cider Vinegar.  Apple Cider Vinegar is another popular home remedy thought to have antibacterial properties that can help fight the infection causing sore throats.  The acidity of the vinegar decreases the pH of tissue, which helps prevent bacteria from growing on its surface.  Mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with half a cup of water a few times a day and feel your sore throat disappear.
  3. Honey.  Honey is a popular home remedy and with good reason! A 2007 study from Penn State University found that honey was as effective as dextromethorphan, the active ingredient in many over-the-counter medicines, at relieving cough symptoms.  Mixing warm water, honey and lemon is an easy and tasty way to rid yourself of a sore throat.
  4. Chicken Soup.  Not only is it good for the soul, but it tastes delicious and research shows that the chicken and vegetable combo helps reduce upper respiratory cold symptoms, including soothing sore throats.
  5. Licorice. Unfortunately, I’m not talking about the candy.  Licorice root is known to soothe and coat sore throats, and helps eliminate phlegm and mucous in the nose, throat and lungs. A 2009 study found that gargling with a licorice and water mixture gave patients with postoperative tracheal tubes less-severe sore throats than those that gargled with just water.

While these treatments can be useful in relieving pain, they can’t cure more serious infections like strep. If your symptoms persist or worsen, definitely make an appointment with your doctor.
