Should You Change Makeup Colors to Suit Your Mood?

Do you find yourself reaching for your ‘look at me’ sunny yellow skirt whenever you’re in a good mood or your darkest ‘I hate my life’ sweater when you’re feeling down? Do you gravitate towards particular colors to pull yourself out of a feeling or do you ever use them to maintain one? It’s not a coincidence if you do. According to an article on, color can have an effect on many aspects of our health and wellbeing and the colors that a person is attracted to can also be an indicator of her personality or mood.

So does this color tendency transfer over to cosmetics too, and if so, is it a good idea to let it? What if you are having one of those days when you just want to hide under the covers and wallow in your own misery (and a pint of ice cream)? Should you slap on some black lipstick before heading out the door? Probably not, but putting on a shade that tends to make you happy might lift your spirits.

As explained on, cosmetics can be used to makeover (pun intended) your own mood or to illicit feelings in others. Try pinks to convey vitality and joy and, ironically enough, blues to make you happier. Gray around the eyes oozes sex appeal and plum lips express confidence.

Of course, all of this begs the obvious question – what if the color that you want or need to wear doesn’t work with your skin tone? Well, the good news is that a lot of times a person can find at least one shade of a color that will work. For example, if you look best in warm shades and are dying to wear a pink lipstick then opt for a coral pink. If you feel like you need a little blue to balance you out, but you don’t suit a vivid shade then maybe try one with a touch of gray and use it sparingly. Unfortunately, this trick won’t work for every color. If you find yourself wanting to wear a color that just won’t work on your face then you might have to use it on your nails or in an accessory.

Have fun with color! Sure it might not always get the attention of the hot guy you’ve been eyeing at work or get you out of trouble when your boss realizes you’ve been staring at ‘said hot guy’ instead of working, but it will brighten your day in some respects.
