Find the perfect hairstyle for fine hair

For as long as I can remember, all I’ve ever heard from family members, friends, and even strangers is how much I take after my mom.  And it’s true – I inherited her blue eyes, freckles, round face, and (sometimes) quick temper.   The one thing that mom failed to pass on to me?   Her beautiful, thick hair.

Instead, I inherited my dad’s baby fine locks.  While it doesn’t look so bad on him, I’ve struggled for years to try to make my hair look thicker and fuller than it actually is. Some days, it seems like an impossible task – but if you’re stuck with fine hair like me, finding the right style can make all the difference between hair that’s thin and limp and a thick, voluminous do.  Here are a few styles that can make even the finest hair look gorgeously full.

Daring Pixie

When you have fine hair, you’re better off with a shorter cut because longer styles tend to weigh down your hair and make it look even thinner.  While you can choose from a variety of short styles, a pixie cut is a bold, daring option that’s sure to get you noticed – think Michelle Williams or Emma Watson if you need some celebrity inspiration.  You can rock a choppy, super short pixie or a longer, wispy style if you want the option of pulling back your hair with a sparkly hairpin, beaded clip, or colorful headband.

Classic Bob

If you’re not brave enough for a pixie, the classic bob is a longer alternative that can still make fine hair look fuller and thicker. A traditional bob usually reaches chin length, but you can take it to your shoulders if you like an even longer style.  If your hair is especially thin, though, go with a shorter, blunt cut bob because it’ll give your hair shape and make it look fuller.  With hair that’s got some natural waves, you can even add some long layers near the ends for sexy movement and fullness around your face.

Long Layers

Just because you have fine hair doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try a longer style if that’s what you like – you just have to choose the right one. If you want to wear your hair past your shoulders, have your stylist cut some layers into your do. The layers will give your hair a fuller shape, so it looks thicker and has more volume – but be sure to keep the layers to a minimum. Adding too many can actually take remove thickness from the bottom of your hair and make it look even thinner.  Keeping the layers long is your best bet, since it’ll maintain volume at the perimeter of your hair to make it look fuller.

No matter what type of cut you choose for your fine hair, you can always add fullness and body by curling your locks. Focus on the roots and top layer of your hair to give it maximum volume – if you’re in a rush, you can even skip the bottom layers since curling the roots will give your hair all the fullness it needs.  Hot rollers are perfect for this look, but you can use a curling iron if you prefer.  Once you’ve got all the volume that you want at your roots, spritz your hair with strong hold hair spray to make sure it stays gorgeously full all day. But be careful when using heat styling tools on fine hair since it can easily be scorched.  Always use a heat protectant spray before curling and use the lowest heat setting possible to style your hair.
