My absolute favorite skin care tips

There are hundreds of thousands of skin care tips out there. Some women swear by wearing an olive oil and egg yolk mask once a week, while others say not washing is the best medicine. Of course, depending on the type of skin you have and professional advice you've received, you can pick and choose skin care tips at your own discretion. Here are my top three favorites that I think tend to work for everyone.

1. Sleep

Okay, fine, sleep is my favorite tip for almost all aspects of health, but it has some serious skin benefits, too! It seems kind of obvious, but the most important way to not look tired is to not be tired! Skipping hours of ZZZs can cause those dreaded undereye bags, blood-shot baby blues and other skin woes. Plus, the more hours you spend asleep, the more hours your eye cream and night cream ingredients have to work!

To make the most of your hours spent in dream land, make sure you pick a night cream with super-nourishing ingredients like shea butter and other ingredients to fight wrinkles. 

2. Wear sunscreen.

Remember that Baz Lurhmann song from the '90s that doubled as an advice-laden graduation speech? It has been called "the sunscreen song" because among his advice about respecting your siblings and keeping love letters, he repeats the mantra "wear sunscreen." Even if your undergrad years are decades behind you, this advice still rings true.

Daily sunscreen application is one of my favorite skin care tips because it's SO easy. It is a mindless step in your skin care routine if you pick a daily moisturizer that contains it, and have SPF 15 or higher. One common mistake women make is skipping the SPF in the winter months. Listen carefully ladies – don't do this! You might not get burned in February, but the wrinkle-causing UV damage brought on by the sun is the same.

3. Eat citrus and chocolate

I love oranges, grapefruits and chocolate, but that's not the only reason I'm recommending them to you. What you eat can make a huge difference on your the health of your skin, and vitamin C from citrus fruits and antioxidants from dark chocolate have both been proven to promote youthful skin!

Citrus fruits are one of the best sources of vitamin C, and research suggests a diet that is rich in vitamin C and low in unhealthy fats and refined carbs may promote healthy, younger-looking skin. Antioxidants protect your skin from free radicals that can cause wrinkles and other signs of aging, so indulging in a small piece of dark chocolate might help protect your precious skin. Try combining these two treats – oranges and dark chocolate make a great workday snack. The happy feelings that this snack gives your brain will  help you glow, too!
