I’m a fashion and beauty slave. So much so I managed to make a career out of it. It’s not enough to page through pretty magazines and endless photos of blogs online, I need to sift through my own products and samples in real life to fill my thirst. I need to play with makeup as if it were a color-by-numbers project. And I soak up YouTube makeup tutorials as if they were feeding my soul (because really, they kind of are.)
Every so often though, I have to wonder, is following beauty trends really worth it? Being a slave to fashion is one thing, but following beauty trends as they constantly change can be downright exhausting. Especially since it usually entails learning new tricks, trying new colors and asking yourself, “Do I really even like this look?”
Trends are Trends
Trends are trends for a reason, just like fashion they can be pretty fickle and often change with the seasons. Shall I invest the time and money to practice Fall’s new red lip, only to ditch it for the new tangerine that’s in for Spring? One of this season’s hottest trends is funky nail polish; you’ll often see a solid-colored manicure with a design only on the ring finger. I personally love the look but can’t help but wonder, will this be something I look back on in 10 years and wonder, “what the heck was I thinking?!” I wonder if sometimes some things are better left as trends for the magazines, and not so much meant to be applied in real life.
Natural is Always In
At the end of the day, there are certain colors and looks that never go out of style and are always complementary. Just like the little black dress is simply classic, so are neutral eyeshadows and natural manicures. Blue eyeliner may come and go out of style but for me, I always look best in black. Knowing what colors look best on you really means your look can never be “off-trend” and sticking to neutrals that flatter your skin tone is always a safe bet.
It’s Not for Everyone
Big brows are back. Big brows are not for everyone. While models like Arizona Muse can pull off the look, I’ve also seen celebrities like Leighton Meester attempt it—and the results were not so pretty. It’s always fun to experiment with new looks and beauty trends but you really have to know and realize what works for you, and what doesn’t. Jumpsuits aren’t for everyone and blue eyeshadow isn’t either.
Be True to You
Bottom line, just like anything else in life, the best rule of thumb is to be true to yourself. Sometimes I see myself lusting after Angelina’s Jolie’s perfectly red pout but when it comes down to it, I know it’s not a look I can pull off or am even comfortable with! What looks best on you is what makes your confidence truly shine. And if that means a classic look instead of the latest-greatest color of the season, I think that’s totally O.K.
Remember What’s Appropriate
Lastly, no matter what the trend, stop and ask yourself “is this age appropriate?” It’s a quick and safe check that should tell you whether or not it’s a trend you should jump on the bandwagon of. If you aren’t quite sure, survey other women around you that are your age and see if they’re embracing the trend or opting out.
What do you think? Are you a slave to beauty trends?
