Spring 2012 hair trends

I’m always on the hunt for hairstyles that are quick and easy to pull off, but still give me a polished look. Fortunately, this spring’s hair trends are all about easy, elegant looks that fit the minimalist fashion and makeup that governed Spring Fashion Week.  So if you want to look chic and totally on trend this spring without losing precious minutes of sleep in the morning, try out one of these super easy and super glam styles.

Ponytails

Ponytails were all over the runway at fashion week shows, and they’re the perfect solution for bad hair days or any morning that you’re in a rush. If you’ve got wavy hair, pull it back into a low pony at the nape of your neck for a simple, casual look. When you need to impress at the office, position your pony a little higher on your head and wrap a strand of hair around the top to hide your elastic. You can also add a little interest to the standard pony for a night on the town by pulling the end back through the center to create a super easy, rolled effect. And don’t forget to accessorize your pony too – use leather cording, satin ribbon, or a piece of raffia to tie it for a look that’s sure to get you noticed.

Sophisticated Braids

Some days, you want a little more oomph than a simply pony can provide. The models at the Giorgio Armani’s and Alexander McQueen fashion week shows rocked sophisticated braids that are perfect uf you want a more romantic or bohemian look. Braid your hair in your favorite style, but instead of letting it hang free, loop it around your head and pin it in place. For a bold, dramatic look, create multiple braids and layer them over one another as you secure them against your head. Mixing smaller and larger braids can also create a cool, textured effect for your hair. If you prefer free-flowing braids, go for a messy, loose version to channel the cool, casual look of the models at the Michael Kors show.

Sleek and Slicked Back

If ponytails and braids aren’t your style, take page from the BCBG and Rebecca Taylor shows and go for a bold, slicked back style this spring. It’s a great option for days when you haven’t washed your hair or any day that you want to make a statement. The look works for both straight and curly hair, but if you’ve got natural waves, you may want to use a straightening iron to smooth the hair closest to your scalp.  Use a gel or a finishing serum to slick back the hair from your forehead to the tops of your ears – but leave the bottom free of product for a soft, natural look. You can pull the bottom portion of your hair into a ponytail or bun if you want a really sexy, sleek style.

Accessorized Updos

While the spring trends are all about simple elegance, models at the Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel shows wore simple updos that were embellished with a few glitzy accessories. You can definitely rock this look for formal occasion or night out on the town, but it’s also an easy away to turn your everyday look up a notch. Pull your hair back in your favorite style of bun and pin it in place with bobby pins that blend with your hair color – then comes the fun part.  Find a few interesting accessories to dress up your up do.  Hair pins with faux pearls or rhinestones on the end are perfect for sticking into your bun at various spots, or place a couple of clips with colored crystals at the top and bottom of the bun. If you want a funkier style, set a clip with feathers hanging from it in the center of your bun and you’ll stand out in any crowd.
