I love wearing my hair in a ponytail. Let’s be honest, what woman doesn’t? This style is easy to create and even easier to wear, especially in the summer – when it’s sticky and hot and the last thing you want is a thick sheet of hair clinging to your sweaty back.
But since we’re being honest here, let’s also admit that the ponytail can be soooo boring. Whether it’s high or low, a plain old pony gets, well, plain and old after a while. I spend a lot of time looking at the fun ways women update this classic look (online and in real life, judge me later). Here are some of my favorite updates to give your pony some punch this summer.
Add twists and turns
Nothing like some twists and turns to make life exciting – and the same goes for your ponytail. I love taking two sections on the side of my head and twisting them back before gathering them into the ponytail. An easy way to get a similar effect is to gather your hair into a low ponytail, loosen the elastic and form a small opening above the elastic. Then, flip the ponytail up and pull it through the hole. Voila! Insta-elegance.
Dress up the elastic
Another way to make a ponytail look more suited for a night out than an afternoon at the gym is to dress up the way the elastic looks. I think it’s classy when women take a strand of hair from the underside of the ponytail and wrap it around the base of the pony to completely cover the elastic. You can either pin the strand with a bobby pin or tuck it into the elastic.
I also love a snazzy hair tie. We’re not talking scrunchies here, ladies, but there are a lot of options aside from a plain old black elastic. A pretty barrette is always cute, but consider a beaded or otherwise bedazzled hair tie to add a little sparkle to your updo. Bows and flowers are also welcome additions to top off a pony.
Weave some wonder into your pony
Come on, did you really think I would write an entire article about ponytails without mentioning BRAIDS? No way. The super-trendy braid (whether it’s a standard three-strand, French or fishtail) is a perfect way to update your ponytail. Weave a small one from the crown of your hair and then wrap it around the elastic. Or, pull your hair into a scalp-hugging French braid that ends with a poofy ponytail instead of a long braid.
The simplicity of the ponytail is part of what makes it so fabulous, but it also leaves so much room for creativity! Curls, braids, kinks – almost any of your favorite hairstyles can be adapted to make your ponytail more beautiful than ever.
