Sleep Deprivation: The Enemy of Ageless Skin

The moment I decided to become a beauty blogger was the moment that changed my life for the better and worse.

Blogging has been great because I get to disseminate information on my areas of expertise to a very captive audience and the continued positive response gives me the juice to continue writing away!

But if only there was just writing involved – there are the beauty launch events that happen from week to week, there must be time to build in play time with many beauty products along with a host of other responsibilities that come with this fulfilling, but time consuming passion. I say all of this to show you exactly why sleep is now a luxury for me and no longer the norm.

Before the big Health & Happiness – hosted by Dr. Mehmet Oz was held at the famed Rockefeller Center this past February, beauty bloggers were given the chance to interview the presenters, one of whom was Dr. Michael Breus, also known as The Sleep Doctor. I spoke with Dr. Breus because I wanted to really understand the relationship between sleep and beauty and get him to answer the question if the lack of sufficient sleep really does affect us negatively. Without skipping a beat, the good doctor said “yes”.

According to Mayo Clinic, adults are to get seven to nine hours of sleep. Do you get this much sleep? Although I’m hard-pressed to honor the Mayo Clinic’s recommendation, it’s been beyond challenging.

If you’re burning the candle at both ends with family, work or schooling and are sleep-deprived, you’re giving the aging monster carte blanche to do it’s dirty work on you by producing sagging and lackluster skin, giving you puffy eyes and creating fine lines & dark circles under your eyes. I’ve seen all of the following on myself in photos except the fine lines & dark circles where sleep that week was at an absolute minimum – needless to say I was horrified.
