Yes, your hair needs sun protection, too

By now, we all know that it’s a bad idea to spend time in the sun without slathering on some sunscreen first.  Skin cancer, sunburn, premature aging – all possible damage to our skin if we don’t apply a little SPF.

Now, faded color, frizz, dryness, and thinning hair may not be as serious as all that, but the sun can wreak havoc on our hair just like it does on our skin. So before you head to the beach, pool, or park this summer, remember these tips to keep your hair protected when you’re out in the hot sun.

Use UV Protection Products

Just like sunscreen lotions and creams for your skin, using hair care products with UV filters can protect your hair from the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays. Start with a shampoo and conditioner that offer UV protection like Lanza’s Swim & Sun Daily Chelating Shampoo and Swim & Sun Daily Hydrating Conditioner.  When you’re styling your hair, finish off with hair spray that contains SPF like Terax Finishing Spray so you know your hair is doubly protected.

Invest in a Hat

If you’re going to be spending all day at the beach or pool, the only way to really protect your hair is to wear a hat (which has the added benefit of shielding your face from the sun too!). A floppy, wide-brimmed hat not only makes a stylish fashion statement, but it will cover all of your hair in the sun. You can also borrow a baseball cap from your guy for a cute, sporty look. If you’re not a hat girl, try tying a colorful bandana or scarf over your hair to keep it protected.

Sunscreen for Your Scalp

When you’re piling on sunscreen in the morning, don’t forget your scalp if you’ve got a defined part – you can get a sunburn or skin cancer on that skin too. Using a lotion or cream with SPF can get messy around your hair, so opt for a spray sunscreen instead.  Spritz some on your fingers to apply, so you can target the skin and not get your hair all greasy.

Keep It Moisturized

Since the sun is very drying on your hair, it’s important to keep your hair moisturized in the summer when you’re spending more time outdoors. Use a weekly deep conditioning treatment to keep your hair hydrated and smooth. The sun can actually break down the protein in your hair, leaving it brittle and weak, so look for a product with added protein like Ouidad’s Deep Treatment Intensive Repair.
