Even though the weather outside is beautiful and sunny, many of us still find ourselves having gloomy, moody and down right blah days. On days like these, I find it important to cultivate little routines and habits to improve my mood, such as taking a long walk, baking cookies or even putting on makeup! Using certain makeup products and techniques can help make you feel better due to the mood elevating powers of some colors and scents.
Before you start your makeup routine, give some extra love to your skin. By taking the time to pamper yourself, you essentially are saying “I am worth it”. This little mantra will give you confidence and comfort during the blah-est of days. Reach for that face mask you only use on special occasions, because why not?! While your face is covered in goop, clay, honey or God-knows-what, relax on the couch in front of your favorite TV show while the mask does all the work.
Don’t under estimate the power of color. Opt for bright, cheery colors instead of the darker, more neutral shades most of us reach for on a daily basis. Although it seems scary, yellow is a perfect color to wear on gloomy days as it’s known to impart feelings of cheerfulness. An easy way to wear yellow is by simply patting on a powder or cream shade to your lids and adding mascara. If you want to highlight your lips instead, choose a bright coral color like Revlon’s Siren.
Incorporate aromatherapy into your beauty routine. Many aromas can be extremely beneficial to our mental and physical health, but my favorite is rose. The aroma of roses creates feelings of comfort, stability and emotional balance. It has quite an uplifting quality which makes it ideal for days when your mood needs a boost. There are many ways to add rose to your beauty routine, and in my opinion, the more rose, the better! Before applying any makeup, start with a fragrant rose facial cream, like Weleda Smoothing Rose Day Cream. Another great flower-scented product specifically designed to make you feel happy is the Physician’s Formula Happy Booster Blush. This powder blush contains Euphoryl, a natural plant extract that promotes a feeling of happiness and mimics the feeling of endorphines, and the smell of violets will instantly make you feel more relaxed. Even if the Happy Booster blush may not be the equivalent to popping a Prozac, the cute heart design will put a smile on your face.
The finishing touch of your happy makeup routine is to spritz rose water onto your glowing face as a setting spray. Close your eyes as the mist gently settles on your skin and take a deep breath in. Aahhh.
