Last year, I had a baby. For the first few months after childbirth, my other new mommy friends and I only discussed two topics during get-togethers: our little bundles of joy (obviously) and our new bodies. Of course, we all had the goal to get our pre-baby bodies back.
A few of my friends starting working with personal trainers and they quickly toned up and trimmed down. Other friends didn’t work with trainers but they still were able to get in shape on their own.
I didn’t know if I needed a personal trainer. It would be awesome to have a coach and cheerleader pushing me through workouts, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to fork over the cash. I needed to learn more about personal training before I made my decision.
Personal training services vary, but most personal trainers offer the following:
- A fitness evaluation. Your trainer may run a series of tests and drills to gauge your overall fitness, endurance, muscle strength, and flexibility.
- A customized training program. A personal trainer will create an exercise program tailored to your goals, ability, interest, and schedule. If you want a tighter tush, your trainer will craft a plan to help get your desired derriere!
- Supervised workouts. To me, this is the most appealing aspect of personal training. I love when magazines include little workout cards that I can tear out and take to the weight room. The only problem? I have no clue if I’m actually doing the exercises right! But personal trainers literally watch your every move to make sure you’re working out the correct way.
Studies show that working with a personal trainer helps you meet your exercise-related goals, no matter what they are. Trainers can help you lose weight, reach a desired fitness level, gain muscle mass, tone up, improve athletic performance, and/or reduce your risk of injuries.
The benefits of a trainer were clear to me. Still, I couldn’t afford the cost. Luckily, I was able to enroll in group personal training. My trainer worked with several clients at the same time, so I still got personalized training, but at a fraction of the cost. A win, win!
Deciding to hire a trainer is a personal decision. There are perks, but many people can reach their desired fitness goals just fine without a personal trainer’s assistance. In the end, I got my pre-pregnancy body back. But I’ll never know if it was due to my personal training sessions or the running I did on my own.
