I consider myself a pretty health-conscious person. I eat a balanced diet and try to stick to a regular exercise routine, but every so often I need extra motivation to get out of bed and work out in the morning. While I know that regular exercise is important to maintaining a healthy weight and for good cardiovascular health, sometimes I need to think outside the box to motivate myself. Below are a few of my non-traditional reasons to exercise.
1. Better skin. Exercising causes your heart to pump faster adding extra oxygen to your skin giving you that healthy glow.
2. Healthier eyes. Physical activity has been linked to a lower risk of glaucoma. Don’t forget to eat your carrots though!
3. Better sleep. Breaking a sweat during the day may just mean better beauty sleep at night. According to a large study published last year in the journal Mental Health and Physical Activity, people who exercised at a moderate or vigorous level for at least 20 minutes a day reported 65 percent better sleep quality than their less active peers. 20 minutes for a better night of sleep? Sing me up!
4. Sharper brain. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which can help you stay sharper. Physical fitness also has brain benefits in the long term, as well. Studies have linked regular activity to decreased risk of dementia and improved memory.
5. Lowered blood pressure. According to the MayoClinic, exercising increases heart strength. and a stronger heart can pump more blood with less effort. With your heart working less to pump, the force on your arteries decreases, lowering your blood pressure.
6. Fewer migraines. A recent study found that 40 minutes of exercise, three times a week, could prevent migraines as well as leading migraine medication Topiramate.
7. Increased immunity. Exercise has the ability to improve your immune system and help you fight off colds, flu and other infections. It can even help you recover faster from a minor infection.
8. Better moods. Working out triggers the release of endorphins, the feel-good chemicals that produce a sense of euphoria in the brain. Even a brisk walk can help you turn a bad day into a good one!
