If you’ve got fine hair – and not a lot of it – you’ve probably been frustrated more than a few times by flat, limp tresses that do nothing for you. I can’t tell you how many mornings I’ve woken up and cursed my super fine hair for its lack of volume and body.
Fortunately, there are ways to pump up the volume in even the finest of hair. It just takes the right products and tools – and a little patience.
Start with Volumizing Spray
If you’ve got fine hair, you should always have a bottle of volumizing spray on hand. When applied to damp hair directly at the roots, it helps add a volume and body, so your hair looks fuller and thicker. Look for a product that boosts your roots without making your hair stiff or crunchy. I like Keranique Volumizing Lifting spray.
Blow Dry Upside Down
You can boost the power of your volumizing spray by blow-drying your hair after you apply it – but for the fullest look, dry your hair with your head upside down. That’ll add lift at the roots for serious volume. As you blow-dry, run your fingers through your hair, lifting it at the roots so you can concentrate the heat there. When your hair is mostly dry, you can flip your head upright and style it as you normally would. Finish with a firm hold hairspray like Living proof’s Hold Firm Hairspray to make the volume last all day.
Boost Your Roots with Velcro Rollers
If upside down blow-drying just doesn’t add enough volume to your fine hair, Velcro rollers can help. Depending on the length of your hair, choose either large or medium-size rollers and place them in the top layer of your hair at the roots. You can add them before you blow dry or add them afterward to maintain the volume that you get from drying. For longer lasting volume, spritz your hair you’re your favorite hairspray while it’s still in the rollers.
Curl It
For a flirty look, boost your hair’s volume with some loose waves. Whenever you add texture to your hair, it looks a little fuller. Use a curling iron with an inch or larger barrel to keep the waves soft and loose, and make sure to curl your hair all the way to the roots. Shake the curls out to create loose waves – the messier and more tousled it is, the more volume that your hair will have.
Cheat with Extensions
When all else fails, try using extensions to add a little more thickness and volume to your fine hair. If you’re worried about damaging your hair with extensions that are glued or sewn in, opt for a clip-in style like the Euronext Premium Clip In Extensions. While they’re usually used to add length to hair, they also work really well for boosting volume –and you can put them in or take them out depending on your style that day. If you choose extensions made with human hair, you can heat style it too so you can curl them for even more volume and texture.
