Try as I might, I just can’t wrap my head around the idea of not getting a tan in the summer. I know that no tan is a safe tan, and that any deepening of my (naturally alabaster) skin tone is actually damaging to my skin. But I just can’t shake my desire to get tan.
As much as I want to be a bronzed beauty, I am not willing to sacrifice the health of my skin to get that way, and neither should you! I’ve done a little experimenting and research over the years and learned something even my dermatologist would agree with: there IS such thing as a safe tan – it’s a fake one!
Here are the best ways to fake your bake this summer (and keep your skin looking its best in the long-run!)
Obviously, the best way to get an all-over safe tan is to use a sunless tanning lotion, gel, spray or mousse. Many women shy away from these products because when they first hit the market, they were undeniably smelly and caused a streaky look.
As they rise in popularity, however, they are also improving in quality. Even some of the cheapest drugstore varieties can offer professional results when used properly. However, if you still don’t trust yourself to do a good job, head to a salon, where you can either get sprayed uniformly by a machine or get the color applied by a pro. The cost of this treatment is worth it to save your skin!
Even though there are plenty of self-tanning products designed specifically for the face, I still get a little anxious about having a self-tan faux pas right where everyone can see it. That’s why I depend on tinted moisturizers in the summer.
This type of lotion can be worn alone in the summer, doubling as a moisturizer and foundation. It can also act as a temporary tanner for the day! Try a BB cream for a tanning effect that also evens out your skin tone and brightens your face.
There are also tinted moisturizers designed for your entire body. Just make sure not to use these when you’re going to wear white, as they might rub off on your clothes (especially if you sweat). Applying a little bit of this lotion to your legs when you wear shorts can go a long way in making them look toned and tan. Plus, it’s a great option if you’re due for a tan but haven’t gotten around to it.
Of course, bronzer is another fantastic way to get golden in the summer. You probably already have and use this cosmetic, but make the most of it this summer by dusting it on your shoulders, chest and back when you wear a strapless sundress or tank top. Don’t be afraid to even blend it onto your legs and arms to fill in any sunless tanning gaps.
You also have the choice between a matte bronzer and something with shimmer. Matte is always good to have, but wearing something slightly shimmery in the summer will reflect light and make you look even more bronzed and goddess-like.
Just remember – just because you’re “tan,” doesn’t mean you don’t need sunscreen. When you get a tan from the sun, it actually does help protect your skin from getting more burned, but the same is not true when you fake bake. Always slather on SPF 30 or higher when heading out into the sun.
