Enjoy the great outdoors this summer

Did you know that getting outdoors is good for your health? Of course you did! You’re not an idiot. Now that summer’s here and the weather is nice, you have even more reason to explore the great outdoors. Here are some fun things to do outside this summer.

  • Eat Outside.  Grilling is one of my favorite things to do in the summer. Grilling fresh vegetables takes their flavor to a whole different level. If you have the room, grow your own vegetables or if you’re like me and live in a tiny walkup, join a CSA or hit up your local farmer’s market.  If you don’t own a grill, pack a picnic and enjoy dinner in your local park or on the beach.
  • Exercise. If you’re still exercising in the gym, reevaluate your life. Why are you running on a treadmill when you could be running on the beach? Biking, hiking and in-line skating are fun outdoor workouts and some gyms offer outdoor classes like bootcamp and even yoga.
  • Go To A Concert. Summer means free outdoor concerts are in full force.  From blowout shows to Sunday afternoons in the park, there’s usually something for everyone. Check out your local newspaper or website and see what your local music scene has to offer.
  • Build Your Own Slip N Slide.  Geek Dad built his own and so can you! You’ll need some foam pool noodles, some velcro, a sprinkler hose, and of course a heavy duty roll of plastic for the body of the slide. Check out the link here to get started. Just don’t do what I did when I was a kid and set it up near a brick wall. My head wasn’t right for a few weeks.
  • Take A Photo Walk. Walk around your neighborhood and take pictures of animals, plants, clouds, your weird neighbors, basically anything you find interesting. You could even start a blog documenting your adventures!
  • Go Geocaching! Geocaching is a great activity for those of you with kids.  It’s a worldwide treasure hunt where people hide and hunt for “caches” all over the globe.  There are probably hidden caches in your own neighborhood!  Just sign up for a free membership, and search for caches in your area. Each individual cache page gives you GPS coordinates, that you plug into your GPS in order to track it. Go to the official Geocache website to get started.

Why are you still reading this? Unplug from your computer and go outside!
