The key to healthy hair is a healthy diet

We all know that eating the right foods helps our body, but did you know it also helps our hair too? Tis true! When I talk about eating for health it’s not just about feeling great, it is having lots of true energy, glistening skin and having healthy, shiny hair.  When you eat the right foods your whole body reaps the benefits. Healthy hair might need shampoo and conditioner to keep it clean, but beautiful hair actually begins with what’s on your plate. While supplements are an option, your body absorbs nutrients and minerals from real food better. Here are some top foods to eat so you can have lustrous hair too!

Salmon. Recently I was traveling in Calgary, Alberta and had some wonderful cedar planked grilled salmon at a friend’s home. I was reminded just what a powerhouse salmon is. Besides being packed with omega-3 fatty acids, it also contains protein, vitamin B-12 and iron. All of these minerals play an important part in your overall health, including your hair, but it is important to remember that your body can’t make omega’s. You can only get them through food. Omega-3’s are essential for health- one reason they are EFA: essential fatty acids. Omega-3 helps the hair specifically by nourishing the scalp. Dry scalp = dull looking hair. Also women are typically low in iron so salmon is a great choice to get your supply of a few minerals and vitamins. If you don’t eat meat or fish, you can get omega-3 from flax seed and chia seed. You might notice that not only will your hair look better but you’ll feel better too.

Eat Green Things. Green foods are more than just spinach. And green vegetables don’t just help you achieve a healthy body; they also act as a natural hair conditioner. See, hair care really does begin on your plate! Kale, Swiss Chard, Broccoli are all excellent choices for eating green things. These vegetables contain Vitamin K, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and iron. Each of these vitamins are crucial for eye health, strong bones and immune system and of course golden locks. Nourish your hair from the inside out!

Go Nuts. If you travel a lot or eat on the go frequently, make sure nuts are packed in your bag. Nuts contain not only omega’s but selenium and zinc. Selenium benefits a healthy scalp and zinc helps to prevent hair shedding. Walnuts, cashews, pecans and almonds are all fantastic sources of these minerals. Eat a handful!
