The oils you DO want on your face

We spend most of our time trying to get rid of any oils on our faces, using oil-free cleansers and lotions, blotting papers and oil-absorbing powders to soak up anything that might look shiny or clog pores. It’s hard to imagine there are oils you actually want on your face.

However, there are! A number of skincare and makeup companies are utilizing oils that are specifically made to treat certain skin conditions – in fact, some of them even help control oil production! How do you figure that? Pick your skin woe to find out which oil is best for your face.

Got acne? Try tea tree oil

You have probably seen tea tree oil in a number of skincare products in recent years. This oil, derived from leaves of the tea tree (duh), has the power to kill bacteria and fungus, which means it’s great for treating acne – remember, a zit is really just a bacterial infection! As it turns out, products with 5 percent tea tree oil are just as effective at treating acne as products with 5 percent benzoyl peroxide.

This oil feels more like an astringent than an oil, so it won’t leave your skin feeling greasy. It’s a great natural alternative if you don’t like the way harsh chemicals interact with your skin.

Get rid of grease with grapeseed oil

Oily-skinned ladies may think they should stay as far away as possible from oils, but it’s not true. In fact, there is one type of oil you can apply to actually make your face look less greasy. Sounds counterintuitive, but grapeseed oil (and peppermint oil) help regulate your skin’s natural oil production – making it produce less overtime. Plus, this oil has antioxidants that will brighten your skin and stave off free radicals that can cause signs of aging.

Argan oil: the anti-aging secret?

If you’ve strolled down the hair or skincare aisle at Sephora lately, you may have seen argan oil on labels of anti-aging products and hair treatments alike. Argan is one of the world’s rarest oils and is derived from the Argan Tree in Morocco. In Morocco, it is drizzled on couscous and pasta, but it has been lauded for its benefits to the skin, too.

Argan oil is high in vitamin E and essential fatty acids, so experts say it has the power to treat dry skin, acne, eczema and perhaps most importantly – wrinkles. There have been no concrete studies to back up the claim that this oil prevents, reduces or slows signs of aging. Still, nourishing the skin with these antioxidants and fatty acids certainly doesn’t hurt when you’re seeking healthy skin.
