4 Fun ways to rock a bun

8-15-12 hair

Whether you’re looking for a way to hide dirty hair when there’s no time for shampoo or just want a polished, put-together look for a night out, it’s hard to top a bun.

When I was a kid, it was always my mother’s go-to hair do for me for holidays, school recitals and Sunday night dinner with grandma.  I totally understand why now – it’s one of the easiest styles to pull together and there are countless variations to make it look a little more special.

If you’re unfamiliar with the versatile wonders of the bun, here are a few simple ways to wear one that are sure to get you noticed at school, the office, or date night.

Ballerina Style

If you still remember rocking a tutu from your long ago dance class days, you probably know how elegant and glamorous a ballerina style bun can be. It may the quintessential bun style, actually, so it’s a good one to master.

Birchbox

Start by dampening your hair slightly, so you can pull it back in a totally smooth, sleek pony tail.  For the ultimate statement bun, position the pony pretty high up on your head. Use elastic to tie off the pony, and then twist the tail into a tight coil.  Wrap it around the base of the pony, pulling it tight until you can tuck the end into the base. To secure your hair, use several bobby pins around the sides of the bun. It’s also a good idea to use a firm hold hair spray like got2b’s Glued Blasting Freeze Spray to make sure your ballerina bun lasts all day.

Side Bun

Give the classic bun a sexy twist by securing it off to the side.  Start by parting your hair to the side and gathering all of your hair to that same side. Just as with a ballerina bun, you want a sleek pony so use a brush to smooth your hair in place. Again, use elastic to secure your pony tail just behind your ear. Then, simply follow the same process for making a classic bun by twisting the hair into a rope, wrapping it around the base of the pony and pinning it in place.  To up your look’s flirt factor, pull a few strands of hair loose around your face for a style that’s ready for date night.

Messy Bun

If you want the ultimate casual bun look, opt for a messy style.  Texture is the key to this look so play up your natural curls or waves with a texturizing product like Oribe Dry Texturing Hair Spray.  If you have naturally straight hair, use your favorite curling iron to add some soft waves to your hair before creating your bun. Next, pull your hair back into a loose pony tail – you can place it wherever you like, but usually the lower the bun, the messier the style. Twist the pony to secure it at the base, but don’t use elastic to secure it – you want the bun loose so some of the hair spills out.  Wrap the end of the pony tail around the base and use bobby pins to secure.  Remember not to make the bun too tight – it should be loose enough that you can pull some pieces free for a casual, sexy look.

Braided Bun

If you want your bun to really stand out, try a braided style.  Start by braiding your hair in a traditional style, but make sure to keep it loose. When you reach the end, hold two of the strands from the braid between your fingers and leave the other to hang free.  Pull on the loose strand and push the rest of the braid up toward the back of your head until you form a bun. Tuck the loose end of the braid under and secure it with bobby pins. Make sure to spray your hair with a flexible hold hair spray like Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly Hairspray so your bun stays put all day.

Dahlia Moon
By: Dahlia Moon

Dahlia Moon is the quintessential Philly girl. Her obsessions include Geno’s cheese steaks, the Rocky statue and of course Phillies baseball. Her grandmother once told her that “your hair is your crowning glory.” From that point on she made sure that her ‘do was always done. Mostly because all she heard was the crown part and she thought her grandma was calling her a princess. When that dream didn’t actually come to fruition, she made it her business to educate other women in keeping their “crowning glory” impeccably coiffed. Her mission now is to keep women “in the know” regarding the latest and greatest hair trends, because every woman should feel like a princess.
