Obsession: 3D Manicures

I’m not sure when it happened exactly but getting your nails done has turned into an art in the past few years. All you have to do is peruse Pinterest or your favorite blogger’s website to see the showcase of nails in funky designs, patterns, magnetic swirls, crazy colors and those with lots of glitter, too. Forget French manicures which are so passé anyway, there are a ton of ways to show personality right on your nails. And the latest trend that I’ve been seeing is the 3D Manicure.

The Ciaté Caviar Manicure

Ciaté has developed what’s billed as the first 3D manicure of its kind: it’s called the Ciaté Caviar manicure and the pictures left me wanting one right away! The DIY kits are available at Sephora in three different shades: white, black and multi-colored beads. When applied, the microbeads leave a cool 3D effect that’s sure to make people’s heads turn.

Each Ciaté Caviar Manicure kit comes with microbeads and the polish that’s needed to apply. You can also find tutorials in the kit, on YouTube and on their website. But even for gals like myself who aren’t very talented when it comes to DIY, the steps look pretty painless.

To apply, Ciaté recommends you brush on at least two coats of the Ciaté nail polish. Then sprinkle the Caviar pearls over your nail. It’s best to do this one nail at a time since you’ll want to dust the pearls on your nail when it’s still wet. When your nail is fully covered with the pearls, take your finger and press them gently into your nail. Then, let dry for 15-20 minutes. It’s pretty easy! And you’ll have interesting nails to talk about.

The DIY 3D Manicure

The Ciaté Caviar Manicure is available at Sephora for $25, but if you’re looking for something a bit more budget friendly or want more color options, try doing it yourself! I’ve found several beauty bloggers achieve similar results with a quick trip to their local craft store and beauty supply.

The first thing you’ll want to do is decide on a color. Check out your local hobby store and look for microbeads. Martha Stewart makes microbeads in a variety of fun colors and you can purchase microbeads online, too. Then, search for a coordinating nail polish. While you can layer the beads over a clear nail polish, you may want to consider getting a nail polish shade that matches the microbeads for a more unified look. This way, any gaps from the microbeads will blend perfectly with your nail polish color.

Once you have your supplies, start on your nails! Apply one or two coats of your nail polish of choice, one nail at a time. While your nail is still wet, sprinkle the microbeads over it. Remember to have a bowl underneath that will collect loose microbeads that you can put back into the container. Just like you would with the Ciaté Caviar Manicure, press the beads down onto your nail. You can also add a clear coat of nail polish on top for a better seal.

When doing it yourself, there are a lot of ways you can experiment! Try an accent nail with the 3D look or mix and match colors. You can even try to do cool patterns like stripes and swirls. If you’re careful with your nails, the results should last you a few days.

What do you think of the 3D manicure trend? Will you give it a go?
