Pucker up! How to master the perfect red lip

The red lip is a classic Hollywood look that exemplifies glamour and romance. Follow these steps to master this bold look, and your man will be mesmerized by something other than the sports channel when you’re trying to talk to him.

Step 1: Create the perfect base. There’s nothing romantic or glamorous about lipstick caked on top of dry, scaly lips – YUCK! To leave your lips looking oh so smooth, apply a thick coat of Vaseline, or your favorite lip conditioner, and rub a soft toothbrush in circles on your lips. This will take off any dead skin and also help your lipstick last so much longer.

Step 2: Fake it till you make it.  If you don’t have naturally plump lips, apply lip liner just outside of your natural lip line to make your lips look fuller. (Adding a dab of lip gloss to the center of both of your lips also helps lips look bigger – you’re welcome).

Step 3: Use lip liner as a base. After lining the outside, continue to fill lips in with the liner to create a foundation for your lipstick and make it last longer. (This will also give your lip gloss something to adhere to).

Step 4: Apply the lipstick.  Different shades of red look better on different shades of skin. If you have fair skin, choose a coral red shade like Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fire & Ice. If you have medium skin, opt for true red or pinky-red shades like Chanel Rouge Allure in Audace, or Rouge Dior Lipstick in Red Premiere. If you have dark skin, stick with rich colors like Lancome L’Absolu Rouge in Smoky Rouge.

Since there’s nothing more horrifying than smiling at someone only to later realize you’ve had lipstick on your teeth all along, make sure the red lipstick doesn’t come on your teeth by placing a tissue in between your lips. Then, close your inner lips, lightly and naturally, as if you’re saying the word “blue.”

Tip:  Favorite lipstick broken? Light a match under the broken portion to melt it just a TAD. Then, press it back on what’s left of the lipstick in the base and place in the fridge for 30 minutes. Voila!
