Beauty counter makeovers – yea or nay?

Have you ever been for a beauty counter makeover? I’ve been for quite a few over the years and I’ve yet to pinpoint exactly what I find so appealing about them. In my experience, it certainly isn’t the final outcome that has me rushing back, but there’s definitely something (or maybe many things) that draws me in.

My beauty counter experiences have consisted of a few wedding day bridesmaid makeovers and some fun, girls-day-out makeovers. Sadly, I can’t say that any of these visits left me with a traffic-stopping look. Actually, scratch that; I had one bridesmaid makeover that definitely would have stopped traffic (but not in a good way) if I hadn’t washed it off and redone it before the wedding.

Most of the time the results I‘ve had have been underwhelming, but not completely appalling. The biggest issue I’ve had at the beauty counter has been with the associates assuming that because I am pale I must suit pink and purple tones. In fact, my mother is Italian and, though I’m pale like my father, I have olive undertones that totally clash with girly, floral shades. I am usually left with a look that, while adeptly applied, leaves me looking like I’m recovering from the flu.

And yet, I have such a great time at the makeup counter that I eventually go back for more. Am I just a sucker for everything beauty related? Well, that’s part of it I guess, but I think there’s a bit more to it. For one thing, I’ve been introduced to some of my favorite products at these appointments. No, maybe they weren’t applied exactly the way I would apply them, but when I got them home I turned them into staples of my regular routine.

Also, while I may not have loved my overall looks, I did often like bits and pieces and so I picked up some great tips along the way. It was at my very first beauty counter makeover that I learned to line my eyes with shadow and an angle brush rather than regular eyeliner to make my liner last longer. I still do my eyes this way almost every day.

I think that the main appeal for me though, is that every time I have done one of these makeovers I have been with good friends. The experiences have afforded me some quality time with some very important people in my life. They have given my friends and me a chance to kick back, laugh and relax together… and sometimes bond over our scary new looks.
