Over the counter hair products pros swear by

You don’t have to spend the big bucks to have great looking hair. Celebs, hair stylists and pros all have their favorite OTC hair products to make hair shine, reduce frizz, restore moisture to damaged hair, and generally improve the look and feel of their hair. You can expect to find these products at your local drug store, beauty supply store, or even your supermarket. Prices vary of course, but none of these staples will break the bank.

John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease Hair Serum

Back in the 1970’s, when hair guru John Frieda invented this product, there was no such thing as anti-frizz serum. No simple soothing balm you could soothe on sky-high hair to get a grip on your look. No wonder it’s been a celebrity favorite since its introduction! Start with a quarter-sized dollop of serum and smooth through your hair. This product has come up on OTC favorite lists for a long time!

Heat-Protectant Spray, such as TRESemme Heat Tamer

By now we hope you know that heat protectors are an absolute must if you’re flat ironing, curling, or blow drying your hair. You may think a quick blow-drying before you step outside won’t harm your hair, but heat damage adds up. Over time, hair becomes brittle, dry, dull and frizzy. Spritz your locks liberally with heat protectant spray before you heat treat your hair. A heat protector also acts like a styling agent and helps hold up the curling or straightening you do to your hair.

Garnier Fructis Moisturizing Shampoo & Conditioner

This OTC standby gets props from Cosmo editors and celebrity stylist, Tommy Buckett.  This is a great moisturizing shampoo which hydrates the hair, which helps boost shine and tamp down frizz before it starts. What’s not to love about that? Don’t go overboard with this one, though. Shampoo every second or even third day to keep hair shiny and leave in more of it’s natural oils.

Kerastase Volumizing Mousse

This is a favorite of Blake Lively, and also gave K-Stew her signature look in Twilight: New Moon. Kerastase works wonders on dry hair. Work a quarter-sized amount of this volumizing mousse through your hair, then style. Enjoy volume that lasts without frizz! This mousse works great for those of you with fine hair, adding lift without weighing down your hair. Pro Tip: Still less is better than more!

Pantene Pro-V Style Volume Hair Spray

This spray comes well-recommended by actress and TV host Maria Menounos. This OTC product adds life and volume back into your hair at the end of a long day. Pro Tip: Flip over your hair and spray the roots with hair spray, then turn upright and shake it out. You’re hair will be instantly refreshed and full.

Neutrogena Triple Moisture Cream Lather Shampoo and Daily Deep Conditioner

For a super moisturizing conditioner that soothes dry hair, try these OTC faves, picked by Hayden Panettierre. This deep conditioner makes your hair smooth, soft, and silky after just a few uses. Neutrogena Daily Deep Conditioner relies on the amino acid “keratin” to deep condition hair. Keratin is becoming hugely popular now in hair products and you can feel good knowing this is a natural product as well. Women with thin or flat hair can also get relief and smooth, shiny hair from this product. Apply liberally and often, because this conditioner won’t weigh down your locks.

Write these down, or drop this page into your smart phone . . . you’ll be glad you did next time you’re standing in front of all those products wondering, “What were those products again???”
