Yes, you can wear colorful makeup without looking like Bozo the Clown

When I see those bright shades of eyeshadow and lipstick in the makeup aisle, I wonder how people actually pull that off. Lime green eyeshadow? Orange lipstick? It’s hard to see how I could wear these bright cosmetics without looking like Bozo the Clown.

That is why, for most of my life, I have stayed far away from these bold makeup colors. It seems like a smart choice, sure, but it’s also a safe choice – one that has landed me in a deep makeup rut. If I’m gonna try the colors of the rainbow on my face, I figure summer is the time to do it.

Here’s how to wear some of the brightest makeup colors – no wig and oversized shoes necessary!

Neon bright eyeshadow

If you are going to wear colors that are more suited for a tub of sherbet than they are for your face, there are certain ways to tone it down so you don’t look like you’re wearing costume makeup. Lime green is a hot trend this season, and the way to rock it is to sweep a deeper, more neutral shade on top, after spreading it from lashline to crease and blending.

You can do this with other colors, too. Feeling like bright blue or orange are a little too garish when applied on their own? Sweep a navy blue or rusty bronze shadow on top to take just a little edge off. Then, apply your liner and mascara as usual – don’t do anything too crazy with these cosmetics, since your eyeshadow will be the star of the show.

Orange lipstick

The trick with orange lipstick is to choose the right tone and hue for your coloring. I won’t lie – not everyone can pull off Crayola’s macaroni and cheese or atomic orange on their lips. But there is a way everyone can pull off this bright lip color trend if they really want to – you just need to think outside the box a bit.

If you have warm coloring, orange is for you. Whether your skin is light or more olive-colored, as long as you have warm undertones you can pretty much pull off any orange hue in the lipstick aisle. Choose one with a bit of red in it so as to not look too outrageous, and keep the rest of your makeup neutral.

The only women who can’t wear a true tangerine lip color are those with cool pink undertones and dark hair (think Rooney Mara). If you fall into this category, you can rock this trend by wearing a shade or coral or even bubblegum pink.

Of course, no matter how you wear them, these colorful makeup looks might not be office-appropriate. But what about that outdoor concert you have planned this summer or a night out with the girls? Be bold and take a risk!
