8 easy ways to boost your hair’s volume

If you’re not one of those women who were fortunate enough to be born with full, voluminous hair, all hope is not lost. Making a few changes to your hairstyle or hair regimen can help you achieve the appearance of thicker, fuller tresses, even if your hair is normally fine, limp or thin. Here are 8 tried and true ways to boost your hair’s volume.

1. Change your shampoo and conditioner.

Wash and condition your hair with a volumizing shampoo and conditioner. Volumizing shampoos and conditioners contain lightweight polymers that strengthen and thicken hair, as well as increase the diameter of hair strands. Alternatively, use a 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner. Although conditioners are great for your hair, they can weigh it down a lot. A 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner gives you the benefits of a conditioner without the extra product build-up. If product build-up is the cause of your limp hair, wash your hair thoroughly with a clarifying shampoo instead. If you want to use conditioner, apply a volumizing conditioner to the ends of the hair only.

2. Forgo the part.

Regularly wearing your hair parted trains it to lay flat. Style your hair without a part or change the location of your part to give your hair extra lift.

3. Make the cut.

Have your hair cut into a bob or minimal layers. A bob gives the appearance of thicker hair, while layers add volume and lift to your hair. Avoid too many layers, which can cause your hair to look limp and scraggly.

4. Diffuse it.

Instead of drying your hair with your blow dryer alone, use the diffuser attachment and blow dry your hair upside down — from root to tip.

5. Tease it.

Perhaps one of the oldest tricks in the book, teasing your hair at the roots with a teasing comb gives you incredible volume. Be sure to do it properly or you’ll do more damage than good. If you’re worried about hair breakage, use a nylon bristle brush for teasing instead of a teasing comb.

6. Roll it up.

Instead of curling your hair with a curling iron, use large Velcro or heated rollers to achieve full, voluminous curls.

7. Mousse it.

Hair mousse,  like Keranique’s Fortifying Mousse,  is specially formulated to add volume to hair. Apply a volumizing hair mousse to wet hair for extra volume and hold.

8. Fake it.

If other methods are not giving you the amount of volume that you want, add a few clip-on extensions throughout your hair to make it thicker and fuller.
