Perfecting the “no-makeup-makeup” look

I love watching actresses on TV go “bare” when it comes to their makeup. Or rather, how movies and TV shows try to convince us that the flawless skin, flushed cheeks and pink lips is au naturel. Lovelies don’t fret because nobody is that perfect! It’s all about perfecting the “I’m-not-wearing-any-makeup” look which, as you guessed it, requires a bit of makeup. Read on for tips on how you too can get this look and look effortlessly gorgeous.

1.  Abandon Your Foundation

First thing’s first, if you want to look like you aren’t wearing much makeup, you’ll have to abandon your foundation. Most of these products are way too heavy to get away with looking like you’re not wearing any makeup. Instead, reach for a tinted moisturizer with SPF, of course to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays. You can shop around for one that leaves behind a dewy like finish or pick up a primer for an even more natural look. Make sure the coverage is just a light tint; it’s about evening out your skin tone not providing a base mask for your face. Also, don’t forget to apply and blend down toward you neck as well for even coverage.

2.  Embrace Concealer

I would never recommend leaving the house without concealer. Most of us have dark circles, uneven skin tone and blemishes to banish! If you’re confident enough in your skin to skip the tinted moisturizer altogether, pair your daily moisturizer-sunscreen combo with just concealer in your needed areas. Just be sure to only dab a bit on and not go overboard. Blend well for the most natural look.

3.  Pinch Your Cheeks

That natural “glow” you see after a run? That’s the color blush you should be aiming for when trying for a natural look. Pinch your cheeks or, after a workout, match your naturally flushed skin to some blush. Forgo the powder kind, which can sometimes be a little dry and instead look for a cheek stain, which will blend more naturally into your skin. Use your fingers to apply.

4.  Pass on Eyeliner

This suggestion is hard for many of us because without eye makeup, we look like we’re sleep walking. But let’s face it, we don’t naturally wake up with cat eyes! If you absolutely must wear some eyeliner, swap out your black eyeliner for a soft brown shade instead. And this doesn’t mean grab another pencil; instead, reach for a brown eye shadow and use an eyeliner brush to apply. The result will be a much softer, natural look.

 5.  Keep Your Mascara

No matter how “natural” of a look you’re going for, don’t skip out on mascara. Unless you have eyelash extensions. Mascara is a great way to open up the eye and isn’t a makeup step I’d recommend forgoing. Instead of piling it on though (as I usually do), go for a more natural look by only applying a few swipes. Maybelline’s Great Lash mascara  is great for defining lashes and creating a natural look, without looking overdone and fake.

6.  Check Your Lip Color

Bright red lips are definitely not natural. And if anything, your lip color is a dead giveaway to how much makeup you may be wearing. A little bit of color is definitely ok, just be sure to keep it on the sheer side. A sheer nude hue or a light pink that is one shade darker than your natural lip color is a good bet for a daily, wearable hue.

You can also pick up a clear gloss for a natural look.
