I remember when I was younger and I would stare or glare or frown, and my mother would warn, “if you keep your face like that for too long, it will get stuck that way…”
Well, good thing I busted that myth so many years ago, because the faces I make when applying makeup are certainly not expressions I’d like to keep there permanently. But they work! I may look like I’m practicing to try out for the circus when I’m doing my makeup in the morning, but the funny faces I make allow me to get my makeup just right. Try them and see if they work for you!
The Fishy Face
Sucking your cheeks in (which makes your lips purse out into a smooch) is one of the most foolproof ways to apply blush. All you do is simply follow the line of your cheekbones with your blush brush, and poof! you’ve got a perfectly natural application. Just make sure you add an even amount to both sides and are looking straight into the mirror when you make this face.
You know the face you make when you are conveying you’re full or ate too much? The Mouth-Full-O-Food, which might otherwise be called the “blowfish,” is a perfect pose for applying powder because it allows the makeup to reach every surface evenly – smoothing out wrinkles and other lines that powder can get stuck in. Look straight into the mirror and fill your mouth with air, puffing out your cheeks and lips, then dust your powder on.
The image you think of when you think of a snob turning their nose up at something (or looking down their nose at those underlings) is exactly the pose to strike when applying eyeshadow. With your chin turned upward, you will want to look down your nose into the mirror. This allows you to see your entire eyelid – from lashline to brow bone and corner to corner – so you can get the most even application of color.
When you apply lipstick it’s tempting to smooth it on like you would a lip balm – with your lips smoothed out like in smile position. However, the best way to get a good application of lip color is to pucker up! Make a smooching face with your lips pursed in kissing position or just relax them altogether and dab on your lipstick. If you apply lipstick with smoothed out lips, you will flatten your mouth’s natural contours and lines, so the end result will look messy.
