All you wanted to know about BB creams

As a beauty blogger, my bathroom is downright scary. Drawers overflow with the latest tubes of serums promising to be the next “Fountain of Youth” and the hallway closet is equally brimming with beauty products, too. Sure, a lot of it is in the name of research, but I also just can’t help myself when it comes to being seduced by the latest and greatest makeup or skincare item of choice. So when I heard that BB creams were the ultimate all-in-one and could whittle down my beauty bundle, I was intrigued, to say the least.

BB Creams, also known as beauty balms or blemish balms, aren’t a new concept–they’re just new to the U.S. market. They’ve been all the rage in the Korean cosmetics market for the past few years and just recently made their debut in the states. The ultimate all-in-one packs quite the punch; many tout themselves as being a moisturizer, sun block, primer and foundation. Plus, they’re packed with vitamins, antioxidants and healing properties, too. It’s no wonder BB creams are this year’s biggest beauty trend!

BB creams were actually invented in the 1950s by a German dermatologist who was seeking to create something to soothe her patients’ skin when recovering from facial peel treatments. What she discovered was a cream that not only protected and soothed the skin, but also helped camouflage redness, too. A concealer that primes the skin and heals too? Oh yes, please.

Needless to say, plenty of brands jumped on the BB cream bandwagon this year. From anti-aging properties to covering blemishes, many are marketed to target specific things. Here are a few of the best BB creams to try.

Garnier Fructis Skin Renew BB Cream Miracle Skin Protector
For a drugstore beauty buy, you may want to try Garnier Fructis Skin Renew BB Cream Miracle Skin Protector. It’s quite the deal at under $15 and acts as a tinted moisturizer, sunblock and helps address issues like dullness, discoloration and dryness. Plus, the vitamin C in the formula helps brighten skin tone.

Estee Lauder DayWear Anti-Oxidant Beauty Benefit Cream
If you’re looking for something with a bit of a higher SPF content, try Estee Lauder DayWear Anti-Oxidant Beauty Benefit Cream with SPF 35. It’s available in two different shades and many testers recommend layering this one over a regular moisturizer. The oil-free formula is especially good at controlling shine and vitamins E and C brighten. Just like the other BB creams, it can be worn alone or under your regular foundation.

Hydroxatone Anti-Aging BB Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 40

If you want anti-aging, coverage and protection, Hydroxatone Anti-Aging BB Cream  is the product for you.  This formula contains a potent antioxidant to reduce free radical damage in the skin.  Plus, it evens out skin tone and visibly brightens dullness and discoloration with active Vitamin C and an advanced encapsulated peptide.

Stila Stay All Day 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm
Probably one of the best beauty balms on the market to help cover and reduce fine lines is Stila Stay All Day 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm. The formula is free of parabens, sulfates, synthetic dyes and petrochemicals and offers long-wearing coverage. You’ll love it for its flawless finish and how it helps to reduce pore size thanks to its use of tiny, coated pigments for super smooth coverage.

Clinque Age Defense BB Cream SPF 30
For a lighter BB cream with great SPF, try Clinique Age Defense BB Cream SPF 30. Caffeine extracts work to soften lines and the formula does a good job at covering minor blemishes. For lighter coverage, use a standalone cream and if you’re looking for more coverage, layer under your regular foundation. The cream comes in three different shades and boasts antioxidant properties as well to help protect the skin.
