I find I tell myself quite often, ‘tomorrow is the day I start my new fitness program’ – it’s always tomorrow and never today. Getting in shape and starting a healthier lifestyle is never easy, but you have to start somewhere. If you are like me and possibly need a little guidance before getting fit, here are some tips from the experts.
Consistency is key
One of the most important parts of starting a workout regimen is to be consistent. It doesn’t matter how small your workout is to start, as long as you keep it up, you will slowly become more in shape.
Follow an effective routine
You should develop a plan in which you incorporate strength training and cardio activity. You don’t have to do both every day, but you should designate certain days to do different exercises to get a full body workout.
Set a goal and make it realistic
Say you have your heart set on running a marathon – that shouldn’t be your first goal. Instead, sign up for a 5K and work your way up. This will give you some motivation on those days when you just don’t feel like doing it.
Don’t forget to breathe
Even though many of us are taught to breathe during yoga class, it does not stop there. It is also necessary to breathe during all workouts – even strength training. This will make for a more effective workout by getting more oxygen to your muscles.
10, 9, 8…
This may sound silly, but counting down is much better than counting up when it comes to reps of your workout moves. If you start at 10, you are less likely to stop at two or three, but if you start at one, you may tap out around eight or nine.
Mind your body clock
Sometimes you meet someone who always has to work out in the mornings, while someone else just HAS to exercise at night – find out when you have the most energy and take advantage of it.
Patience is certainly a virtue
Nothing happens overnight, and that includes getting in shape. Be patient and keep up the hard work. When it is all said and done, you will feel great and it will be worth it!
