The times you should betray your salon

I would call myself a loyal client. I’ve been going to the same salon for years and there are few things I love more than treating myself to highlights, glosses, scalp massages and countless other treatments that make my hair healthy and oh so pretty!

But let’s face it – the salon options that make our hair look so stunning are not cheap. As much as I would love to spend a quarter of each paycheck on the rest and relaxation that is the hair salon, I have to eat. (Darn!) Fortunately, many of my favorite hair treatments are easy (and effective) to do at home. You may not get the champagne and latest dish on your stylist’s boyfriend, but you will save some money and the same end result in your tresses.

Scalp treatments

What you get at home: Many salons are offering special scalp treatments these days, meant to nourish your hair at its base to promote healthy follicle growth while massaging your scalp and curing any scalp-related issues like dandruff or itchiness. There are plenty of these treatments you can try at home to solve any number of scalp and hair woes, so you can save yourself a good chunk of change. You can even make your own by mixing lemon juice, olive oil and water. Massage this into your scalp to cure itchiness.

What you miss: That soothing scalp massage performed by someone else. But hey, practice makes perfect!

Change to your hair color

What you get at home: You’ll get professional-looking results if you’re only changing your hair color by a few shades or covering a few grays when using box color. Any major changes should be left to a pro.

What you miss: If you’re looking for a major change to your overall appearance or something complex like multi-tonal highlights, you’ll probably be disappointed. If you’re trying to go brunette, you might be particularly disappointed – dark colors are hard to get right, as they tend to turn orange.

Keratin straightening

What you get at home: With all the keratin products on the market today, it’s pretty easy to infuse your hair with this shaft strengthening protein. There are a number of multi-step kits that allow you to get almost salon-perfect results.

What you miss: Cancer! Well, not necessarily, but with all the talk of salons using potentially dangerous ingredients like formaldehyde in their Brazilian straightening treatments, you might be better off using a product that lists ingredients.
