How to whiten your teeth naturally

Woman smile. Teeth whitening. Dental care.

The whiter and brighter your teeth, the greater your smile. Everyone wants a mouthful of pearly whites and many people spend a fortune trying to attain it. From pricey visits with the dentist for laser treatments to over-the-counter whitening kits and toothpastes, most people are spending a small fortune on something they can fix at home.

I’m sure you know that lifestyle choices influenced the coloration of your teeth, but did you know that as you age your teeth yellow naturally? That’s right; even if you don’t smoke, drink coffee, red wine or consume citrus fruits, you are still going to see a little jaundice of the teeth. Not fair.

A Few Not So Fun Facts

Like I mentioned above, your teeth will naturally begin to yellow as you age. Thanks to the chromogenic agents found in some of our favourite foods and beverages, we can speed up this process. It’s not just food and drinks we need to worry about; even antibiotics can help stain our teeth.

While our first instinct may be to run to the pharmacy and buy the latest and greatest cream, gel, strips, mouthwash or toothpaste with whitening capabilities, perhaps we should be reading the label a little more carefully.

For many of these pricey store-bought products, the most active whitening agent is actually hydrogen peroxide. Yep, Hydrogen peroxide, that little brown bottle that can be found in most pharmacies for about $3 a bottle. So why are we spending so much money on something that can be found for so little?

If you want to throw caution to the wind and say “damn the man,” stop spending your big bucks on pre-made products and get down with your inner DIY’ing diva.

Say Hello to H2O2

Did you know that 3% hydrogen peroxide is actually deemed safe for oral use? Well, now you do.

Simply mix together 2 tablespoons of 3% hydrogen peroxide and 2 tablespoons of water for your very own whitening mouthwash. Swish it around your mouth for 30-60 seconds for best results. As you gargle, you’ll notice that your solution begins to foam; this is perfectly normal. After your 30-60 seconds are up, spit out your mouthwash and brush your teeth as usual. Try and avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes after rinsing.

I cannot stress this point enough; DO NOT use hydrogen peroxide over 3%. Anything over 3% is not deemed safe for oral use and can harm you.

Berry Bright Pearly Whites

If H202 is not for you, try this more natural recipe.
Strawberries contain malic acid which acts as an astringent to remove surface stains from teeth. Combined with the gentle abrasiveness of baking soda, these two ingredients can be mixed together to form a pretty potent teeth whitener.

All you need to do is mash up one fresh strawberry until it is pulpy. Then just blend in your baking soda until it forms a nice paste consistency. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush spread this paste all over your teeth and let sit for no less than 5 minutes. Once your 5 time is up, use your regular toothpaste and gently scrub away your berry-soda paste. Follow that up by rinsing out your mouth and flex those lips into a big, bright smile!

However, before you get carried away, I should mention that you should only use these DIY’s once a week to reduce the risk of damaging your tooth enamel.

As you can see, you don’t need to spend a fortune on products and treatments to achieve the smile you’ve always wanted. Got any more home remedies on how to whiten your teeth naturally? Be sure to share in the comment section below! After all, we ladies love options!
