Why you should incorporate MMA training into your workout regimen

When you hear the words “Mixed Martial Arts” or “MMA” you probably think of two jacked guys kicking and hitting each other in a round cage until their faces bleed and end up rolling around with each other on the floor until one of them taps out.

This might be what you see on tv in a professional match or on the reality show “Ultimate Fighter,” but there are actually a lot of benefits for women who take part in MMA training classes or bootcamps. How do I know? I tried it! A friend of mine teaches part time at a local mixed martial arts gym and invited me to attend one of their women’s bootcamp classes. It only took one class to get me hooked.

What exactly is MMA training? MMA is a full contact combat sport that originated in Ancient Greece. It’s a combination of boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Karate.

These things combined provide a fun, challenging workout that is never the same. Every time you go for a run, you just go out there and run, but when you show up to an MMA workout, you never know what you’re going to end up doing. One minute you’re kicking and punching your partner (wearing protective gear), the next you’re climbing ropes.

There are a lot of benefits to taking an MMA class and incorporating these workouts into your daily exercise routine. It will help you become more fit and lean. And with the average workout burning about 1,000 calories, it will aid with weight loss.

My favorite thing about an MMA workout is it’s almost like your own self-defense class. You never know when you may have to defend yourself or a loved one, and the techniques I’ve learned in class actually make me feel confident that I could take care of myself if I needed to. That alone has been a huge confidence boost. You don’t get that from an elliptical machine.

Mixed martial arts gyms are popping up all over the place and most of them are run by or sponsor local fighters. You could end up working out next to a future or current MMA star! I would definitely recommend taking an MMA class to anyone. There are so many benefits and even though it can be challenging, you will walk out of every class feeling confident and like a new person.
