Acne at any age can be a hassle. I’ve suffered from acne my entire life. Yet, my methods for preventing acne have recently changed a bit. As an adult my skin has become drier, and I have less time to treat it. Whether or not you suffer from adult acne, it is important to practice these preventative methods to ensure clear and clean skin. While some tips may seem obvious, it can be hard to be vigilant about a daily routine when you’re always busy.
Here are my tried-and-true tips for preventing acne.
1. WASH YOUR FACE MORNING AND EVENING
Use a gentle cleanser or one that contains salicylic acid; this ingredient kills the bacteria in the pores that can cause acne. Make sure to use tepid water. If the water is too hot, it can irritate your skin.
Toning helps remove surface oils that can trigger acne. Be sure to avoid toners that have a high alcohol content; they’ll only dry out the skin causing it to be red and inflamed.
When choosing a moisturizer, try finding one that is lightweight and won’t clog pores. You can even find moisturizers that contain acne-fighting ingredients! You’ll also want to use a moisturizer with SPF during the day. Keep a separate one to use at night that doesn’t have SPF to give your skin a little break from the chemicals.
If you already have acne, apply a spot treatment that contains sulfur or salicylic acid directly on any blemishes.
Washing your face every day isn’t the only thing that’ll keep the acne away. Exfoliating once a week will help clear away any dead skin and bacteria, resulting in smoother, softer, clearer skin.
Visit a dermatologist or facialist; he or she can evaluate your skin and offer personalized recommendations. If you’d like to try an at home facial, we recommend Miracle Revival Mud Skin Restoring Treatment Mask. This mask helps unclog pores, delivers natural nourishment and eliminates dead skin.
An easy way to improve your skin is by drinking plenty of water and adding a daily supplement to your diet. Vitamin E and Zinc can help prevent scarring and infections.
For those who love to work out, it is important to shower immediately after exercising. Sweat can trap dirt in the pores, resulting in more breakouts. You might want to try switching to oil-free makeup along with products that are chemical- and fragrance free. You’d be surprised how often your irritated and inflamed skin can be fixed simply by switching to the right cosmetics (I speak from experience!).
These methods can benefit anyone who suffers from acne –it just takes a little dedication.
