Anti- heat summer hairstyles

There are plenty of things to love about the summer, but I am definitely not a fan of extreme heat and humidity.

Don’t get me wrong – I love warm weather and sunshine as much as the next girl, but when the temperatures hit the 90’s and I break sweat just walking three blocks from the office to my favorite coffee shop, I am not a happy camper.

On days like that, the last thing I want to do is slave over a hot stove to make dinner… or a hot curling iron, blow dryer or straightening iron to get my hair looking good. That’s why my heated styling tools get shoved to the back of the bathroom cabinet when the weather starts to heat up.

But that doesn’t mean I want to be stuck with limp, flat, boring hair all summer long.

If you’re like me and want to take a break from any unnecessary heat in the summer, here are a few no-heat hairstyles that’ll leave you feeling cool and looking good no matter how high the temperatures rise.

Go Beachy

If your usual go-to style is curls or waves from a curling iron, try a fresh from the beach inspired look instead. The style will vary based on how much texture your hair has naturally, but it’s an ideal look if your hair is curly or wavy.  Start by washing your hair, applying a sea salt spray like the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, and letting it air dry.  If your hair is straight, you may want to put it up in a bun or braid it as it dries to give it some extra body and texture. When you hair is mostly dry, take it down and give it another spritz with the sea salt spray.  You can also scrunch up your hair a bit to give it more texture and really mimic the look of windswept, beachy waves.

Get Braided

Casual hairstyles are perfect for summer, but if you want a relaxed look that’s a little more special, go with a braid.  There are so many different types of braids; you can find one to fit any occasion. If you’re looking for a style to wear to the office, try an elegant French braid.  For an afternoon running errands or grabbing lunch with friends, try a messy side braid.  When date night rolls around, go with a sexy fishtail braid. No matter what type of braid you choose, apply a smoothing serum like Herbal Essences Touchably Smooth Smoothing Serum before braiding to keep your hair frizz-free.

The best thing about braids?  If you braid your hair when it’s still wet, you’ll have a style all ready to go for the next day since you’ll have soft waves left in your hair when you take the braids out.

Top Knot

There are some days when it’s so hot and humid that I just can’t stand the feel of any hair on the back of my neck.  That’s when a top knot is the perfect style to try – and best of all, it’s super easy to do.  Start with damp or dry hair and pull it back into a pony tail with an elastic – wherever you position the pony, that’s where you bun will be so make it’s as high as you’d like. Next, wrap your hair around the base of the pony to create the bun. Use bobby pins to keep the bun in place.  To make sure your top knot lasts all day, spritz it with an anti-humidity hair spray like Garnier Fructis Volumizing Anti-Humidity Hairspray to lock it in place.

Pony Tail

If you’re like me, you get a little lazy on super hot summer days and it’s tough to put a lot of effort into your hair. At times like that, don’t estimate the power of a basic pony tail. It may be simple, but you can customize it to suit your style and needs. Go for a sleek, sexy look with a tight, high pony or keep it casual and romantic with a low pony.  And don’t forget accessories if you want to dress up your pony  –  you can pair it with a colorful headband or boldly patterned scarf or use a pretty ribbon to tie it off instead of a regular hair elastic.
