Boutique fitness studio vs. the gym

I recently wrote about choosing the right gym and deciding what factors are most important to you such as price, location, classes, etc. You may want to consider skipping the gym and joining a boutique fitness studio instead.  A boutique fitness studio is usually smaller than a gym, may offer less of a variety of classes, and can be more expensive than a gym membership. So, you may be wondering why so many people have been choosing small studios over gyms lately. There are many benefits to joining a boutique fitness center that may make the high membership cost worth it to you.

1. Specialized classes. Boutique fitness studios specialize in a certain area of fitness, so the exercises are usually more effective and efficient. The instructors are trained to teach a certain fitness method and are usually very educated in the science behind the exercises. I go to these classes knowing I am going to get the most out of my hour and see amazing results if I go on a regular basis.

2. Individualized attention. The classes at a boutique fitness studio are usually much smaller than those at a big gym. This means that the instructors can take the time to help with any modifications you may need. Some big gym classes are not very safe since the instructors are unable to correct improper form which can lead to a higher risk of injury. Also, the instructors at a boutique fitness studio will often take the time to learn about your diet and lifestyle and may even help with a nutrition plan to complement your exercise routine.

3. Community. Because there are smaller class sizes and fewer members than a gym, there is community-like atmosphere in boutique fitness studios. It is nice to see the same members every time you go to class. The members care about one another and often act as motivation and a support system. Sometimes fitness studios set up special challenges such as attending a certain amount of classes per week, or sending food journals to friends. This really helps the members to bond and care about each other.

While you may save some money by joining a gym, the results you will get from belonging to a boutique fitness studio can make the price worth it. The individualized attention and top-notch instructors are hard to find in big gyms.  From my experience, I saw more results going to a boutique fitness class a few times a week in 6 months than I did spending 2 hours at a gym 5 times a week. I decided that it is worth the extra money to me since I go to the gym to see results and to feel healthy. Many boutique fitness studios offer a free week or a discounted class package so you can try the studio out. I will warn you ahead of time that you will most likely become addicted to all of the attention you will receive and how amazing the instructors will make you feel during and after every class.
