When it comes to eating healthy and following a regular fitness plan, tracking food and exercise is a popular method that works for many people. Keeping a food diary with calorie counts can be a useful tool for some, while sending food plans to friends can be another great method. With all of the new technology and Smartphone applications available to us, there are many different ways to stay on track that it can get confusing on which method to use. It is up to you to determine which techniques works best and are most sustainable for you and your lifestyle.
I tried several different methods in the past, from writing my meals in a notebook, to emailing meal plans to friends, blogging about my fitness plans every week, and even taking pictures of every single meal. While I do still blog about my meals and fitness plans, I have found two websites that are most helpful to me when tracking food and exercise. These websites are called DailyMile and MyFitnessPal.
DailyMile is social training site in which users can track their workouts, motivate friends, and share exercise class reviews with others. I have tracked every single one of my workouts for the past two years on this site. I love to share with friends how I was feeling during my fitness class, as well as my thoughts about the class, instructor, or studio.
It always feels amazing when a friend sends me motivation or leaves me helpful comments about my workout. I especially love to read about what workouts my friends are doing and their thoughts about each class. The workouts can be shared on Facebook and Twitter, so thousands of people end up reading about my workouts. It is especially exciting to see how many workouts I completed after one year and it helps me to set higher goals for myself for the following year.
In terms of food tracking, my favorite website and iPhone application to use is MyFitnessPal. The iPhone app is very easy to use and is the fastest method I have found for tracking my daily meals. I have tried writing down my food intake in notebooks but I always end up guessing the calories because I do not like to take the time to do the research.
The “notebook method” would never last for more than a month at a time. MyFitnessPal makes it very easy to track calories because it has millions of foods and their nutritional contents already saved in the database. I can click on a specific brand of oatmeal and it automatically knows the exact calories and fat. MyFitnessPal is also a social application so my friends can view my food plans and whether or not I stuck with my calorie goals for the day. While I am not one to track my calorie intake every day, I do think it is necessary every now and then to keep myself in check. Even if I am not tracking every calorie, I visit MyFitnessPal on a daily basis to motivate friends and to input my meals to get a general idea of how much I am eating.
I highly recommend trying DailyMile and MyFitnessPal if you need a fast and easy way to stay on track with food and exercise. Both of these tools will hold you accountable since your friends can see what workouts you are doing and how much food you are consuming. You may even get new and exciting ideas for healthy meals or workouts!
Imagine how great you will feel when you see on January 1 that you completed hundreds of workouts in one year.
