Are you committing these 7 skincare crimes

Our skin changes as we age, but you can keep your skin looking young and fresh longer if you take good care of it. You might be speeding up the aging process without even knowing it! Here are some common skincare mistakes you might be making that you don’t even realize it.

1. Sleeping with your makeup on

If you sleep with your makeup on each night, the cosmetics can clog your pores. It will leave a film on your skin that will cause irritation and dryness. Make sure you wash your face completely before you go to bed or over time your skin will be very irritated and more prone to breaking out.

2. Tanning and laying in the sun

We all know the dangers of the sun on our skin. Tanning and laying in the sun will not only cause wrinkles and dryness but it will age your skin very fast. Not to mention the dangers of skin cancer. You may not use enough sunscreen either. Be sure to use a shot glass worth of sunscreen on your entire body. Don’t forget easy to forget places like your scalp and reapply after swimming or sweating.

3. Thinking you only have one skin type

Your skin type can vary because of changes in the environment, your diet, exercise habits and hormones. When you go through extreme stress or something like a pregnancy, your skin type can change dramatically. Sticking to one skin care routine your whole life can equal disaster. Be sure to get your skin checked by a dermatologist at least once a year and change your skincare routine when your skin changes.

4. Not eating enough fat

Yes, that’s right – eat more fat for great skin! Dietary fat of the right kind, such as the omega-3 fatty acid in fish helps lubricate the skin from the inside out as it helps create sebum, an oily substance that moisturizes and protects skin.

5. Know what products to use in the right order

It can be very confusing to figure out which products to use first and in what order. Most dermatologists recommend that you put on the product that is the lightest in texture first and layer heavier creams and serums after that. However, if you are using sunscreen or a product with SPF be sure to put that on first so it can soak into skin properly. Don’t be too concerned but just try to use what you feel is the lightest and go up from there.

6. Use skin care problem treatments first 

There is an exception to the earlier rule. If you have a skin issue like acne or rosacea and use a gel, ointment or cream to treat it, use it first before anything else. Put the treatment only on the problematic area to get the most benefits from it.

7. Don’t use an electric exfoliating tool every day

Exfoliating is great for your skin. It gets rid of dead skin cells, trapped dirt and oil and refreshes your skin. However, electric exfoliating tools or abrasive scrubs are more harsh than a simple exfoliating cream. Use them only once or twice a week to get the best results. It will keep your skin smooth and clean without irritating it.
