Fix tired-looking eyes, today

No matter what age you are, you can have tired eyes, dark circles and bags under your eyes. As you age, this problem can get much worse if you don’t care for your eyes.  Here are some common skin problems near the eyes that are fairly easy to fix.

Are your eyes often puffy in the morning? There are several causes of this puffiness; seasonal allergies, cold, sinus infection or consuming lots of salt. This leads to water buildup under the eye and gives you that puffy look. There are, however, some simple fixes depending on the root cause of a puffy eye.

If the cause is allergies or an illness , treat it with allergy or cold medications. If you tend to develop sinus infections,  try a neti pot to flush out your nasal cavity and relieve any fluid buildup. It will in turn reduce the puffiness of your eyes. You may also want to change the way you sleep. Sleeping on your side or stomach can encourage the fluid to flow under your eyes. Try sleeping on your back to reduce this.

A quick fix for puffy eyes is to place a cold spoon, a bag of frozen vegetables from the freezer, a cold cucumber or tea bag under your eyes or where it is the puffiest. The cold will reduce the swelling very quickly and you should feel a nice relief.

Another common problem is dark circles. They may come up from too little sleep or even a hangover.  Some people are simply prone to dark circles as a hereditary issue or age. Makeup is the most effective at hiding dark circles and some concealers now also work to reduce the dark circles long after you remove your makeup at the end of the night. Remember to lightly pat on concealer and not rub harshly as this could exacerbate the problem.

A few more things you can do to keep your eyes looking youthful without resorting to surgery and lasers are to avoid smoking and always apply sunscreen by your eyes. Sun and smoke can cause premature wrinkles and sagging. You can also try an eye cream with caffeine to reduce puffiness, dark circles and prevent crow’s feet.
