Over the years, I have learned the importance of wearing clothes to the gym that look good, feel good and do not distract me from an awesome workout. When I first started exercising, I would wear big t-shirts, cotton wife-beaters and tights that either fell down or were see-through. I owned one sports bra that gave me no support at all.
I did not care because I thought that it was silly to spend money on nice workout clothes that would eventually get ruined from sweating in them. I remember wearing a wife-beater to run and experiencing painful chafing from the material rubbing against my arms. I wore giant t-shirts and had to worry about the entire gym seeing my stomach when I did a pose on my hands like Downward Dog. I am sure my armpit sweat stains were not too attractive either.
Since my sports bra did not fit me, jumping up and down and running was especially painful. Because my clothes were not made for exercise and did fit me, I felt ugly and uncomfortable during my fitness classes. They were distracting me from having a great workout so something needed to change.
Once I moved to New York and saw how fashionable all of the girls dressed for the gym, I realized my fitness wardrobe needed an upgrade immediately. I bought my first Lululemon outfit and could not believe how comfortable I felt during my sweaty spin class! I did not even feel the sweat since the clothes are sweat-resistant. It was also great not having to worry about my pants falling down since they finally fit the way they were supposed to. I felt confident and was finally comfortable staring at myself in the mirror for the hour during my fitness class. I could not believe I waited so many years to actually wear “gym clothes” to the gym.
If you are still wearing big cotton t-shirts and a regular bra to the gym, I highly suggest investing in active wear that fits correctly and looks good. If you are not sure of your size, many fitness stores will take your measurements for free. Don’t be scared to ask store employees for their opinions.
If you are concerned about the price of fitness clothes, remember why you go to the gym. You most likely exercise to look good and feel good about yourself, so why not feel amazing during your actual workouts? While I personally find Lululemon to be the most flattering and comfortable brand of active wear that I own, stores like Target (which has their very own activewear line, C9 by Champion) and Marshall’s also sell high quality active wear for discounted prices.
Use fitness clothes as a reward for working out. Next time you complete your fitness goals for the week, treat yourself to a new outfit. This will motivate you to stick with your goals, and you will feel confident and comfortable during every workout.
