Yoga is an ancient practice that has been around forever. Well, not quite forever but give me a break here. Maybe you haven’t tried it yet, but are interested and aren’t sure if yoga is right for you. Here are some pros and cons that may help you decide.
The biggest pro of yoga is that it is an exercise that works your body and helps relax your mind. Yoga is a great stress reliever. A yoga class will contain deep breathing, flow from posture to posture, positive affirmations and at the end, a time of silence, relaxation and reflection. The benefits include weight loss, improved flexibility, strengthened and toned muscles. Yoga is also a great detox. You’ve heard of hot yoga class that causes you to sweat all of your toxins out. It massages your internal organs and helps get rid of all those toxins from daily life.
You might be hesitant to try yoga because of the perceived high cost. I highly recommend joining a yoga studio for the camaraderie of a yoga class, having a teacher to correct your movements and keep you from hurting yourself and minimizing distractions. However, if you cannot afford to join a studio, yoga DVDs can be relatively inexpensive ranging from $5.00 to $30.00. Got the internet? Search for free yoga routines on Youtube like those from Lesley Fightmaster who has a new class every Monday.
Are you afraid to begin yoga because you don’t know where to start? Remember that every expert was once a beginner and that you’re not in competition with anyone.
You may have to try different studios, DVDs, classes or teachers until you find a yoga practice that is fulfilling to you. That’s okay! If you try it a few times and discover it isn’t for you at all, that’s okay too. But if you are looking for a new workout that will uplift, de-stress and tone you, yoga might be right for you.
