Benefits of Oil Pulling

Oil pulling has been around for centuries, but it is just now getting some recognition. You might have seen it on Facebook or Pinterest and wondered what the buzz is really about. It seems everyone is talking about oil pulling these days. Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice meant for detox and rejuvenation. Oil pulling is great for your oral health including these benefits: strengthens teeth, gum and jaws, prevents oral diseases, prevents bad breath, a holistic remedy for bleeding gums, whitens teeth, prevents dryness in mouth, lips and throat, and a holistic treatment for TMJ and other jaw ailments. Other benefits may include: headache or migraine relief, corrects hormone balances (especially in women), reduces arthritis inflammation and pain, reduces eczema and other skin issues, reduces symptoms of bronchitis, reduces symptoms of gastro-enteritis, helps support kidneys, helps reduce sinus congestion, reduces insomnia, helps heal a hangover, reduces all over pain, reduces symptoms of allergies and is a great detox of metals and organisms. It is also great for your skin because it detoxes so well.

How about all those benefits? If you’re willing to try oil pulling, here is how you start. Now, to try oil pulling, choose an oil of your choice, but make sure it is an unrefined, high quality oil. Most people use coconut oil but sesame oil is great as well. Raw coconut oil has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and enzymatic properties and kills unwanted bacteria in the mouth and has a better taste than most oils. Sesame oil is great if you have a lot of cavities or gingivitis. Test different oils until you find one that works best for you and that you enjoy the most.

Now that you have your oil, scoop ½ to 1 full tablespoon of oil in your mouth and allow it to melt a little bit. Try to do this on an empty stomach, so first thing in the morning is recommended. Now push, swirl and pull the oil between your teeth, gums and mouth. However, don’t let it get near your throat so that means no gargling. You don’t want it to come in contact with your throat because it could contain toxic material that you are swishing out of your mouth. You can do this for anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. When you’re finished, spit in into the trash can. Never spit it into the sink because the oil could clog your drains. A great time to oil pull is in the shower because your mind is kept busy with showering and you can spit it when you’re done (just be sure not to spit it in your drain). Rinse your mouth with fresh water or salt water and drink a big glass of cool water.

Have fun with the process or allow it to be your meditation time in the morning. It may seem unnatural or gross at first, but try it several times before you knock it. See how it makes you feel and how it detoxes you after. Keep in mind the first several times may be the hardest. You could develop a “detox headache” right after you oil pull and the texture may be shocking at first. But give it a go for about a week and see how it makes you feel and if it helps any symptoms or problems you were having.
